Health advice is increasingly complicated, confusing and hard to follow.
Unfortunately I see a lot of people trying very hard to improve their health, getting caught up obsessing over things that truly are not going to make much of a difference for them.
It isn’t that they are not trying, it’s that they are putting a lot of effort into things that yield very little in the way of results.
So at the risk of completely oversimplifying health into one giant generalization (which I am doing) Here are the 3 things that most people would benefit from when it comes to almost every health issue you can imagine. If you are not doing these three things, then this is where to start.
1. Exercise daily. Notice I am not even getting into specifics at this point. I don’t care if it’s walking, weight lifting, golf, marathons etc…. Just daily exercise, even without a great plan is the best way to increase your health. This doesn’t just mean feeling better or looking better, it means decreasing your risk of every disease you can think of, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s etc…
2. Don’t eat too many calories. Notice I will not get into specifics on diet here, vegan vs carnivore, organic vs GMO, seed oils vs beef tallow. Because those things matter less than calories. This is probably going to be the most controversial statement here but it’s true that you can eat a “perfectly clean” diet, but if you’re consistently overeating, it will wreck your long-term health. Staying in energy balance, however you choose to get there, does more for disease prevention than obsessing over every single nutrient.
3. Maintain mobility / healthy movement. This is becoming increasingly important as we move more and more toward a technology based world. Where most of our days are spent in a car, at a desk, on a computer, or looking down at our phones. We can feel the tension developing through our shoulders and our spines stiffening by the day. This inhibits our ability to live pain free and eventually our ability to remain active. While the other two greatly impact the quality of our health, this third one has the greatest impact on our quality of our life. Our ability to live and move pain free, and continue to do the things we love as we get older.
So I understand that this is really oversimplifying things, but not really all that much. I would rather focus on the things that will make the biggest difference, then argue about the details. I promise you if you are not doing these three things then you will notice the biggest difference by starting here.
If you already do these three things then this post is not for you, feel free to get further into the weeds and details of your routines. But most people are not there yet and this is where they should start if they want to make the biggest improvements.
