Employee Spotlight: Scott Barkemeyer, LMSW

Scott Barkemeyer has dedicated the past nine years to social work, with over four of those years spent serving patients and families at Prairie Wind Hospice. His passion for people is at the heart of everything he does. Scott genuinely loves learning about others’ lives and believes that everyone has a story worth telling, even though not everyone gets the chance to share it.

Outside of work, Scott stays busy with a lively household that includes six dogs, two reptiles, and four fish tanks that he proudly maintains. One of his dogs, Lou, is also part of the Prairie Wind Hospice family, spending time visiting patients and brightening days in the office.

Scott is an avid collector and trader of Pokémon cards, a hobby that reflects his enthusiasm and attention to detail. He is also fluent in Spanish and values the opportunity to connect with Spanish-speaking patients and families, helping bridge communication gaps and ensure they feel heard and supported.

Born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, Scott is deeply rooted in his community. He and his wife, Sarah, will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary this May.

Known for his compassion and understanding, Scott consistently goes above and beyond to support his patients through whatever challenges they may be facing. His dedication and empathy make a meaningful difference in the lives of those he serves every day.

Employee Spotlight: Ruby Quinn Beavers, HHA

She has been in healthcare for 13 years, almost three of those years have been with Prairie Wind Hospice. Ruby brings compassion, dedication, and heart to hospice care every single day. What she loves most about her work is the ability to truly connect with her patients—getting to know them on a deeper level and being there for them during their times of greatest need.

Outside of work, Ruby is a proud mom to her 3-year-old son, who she calls her shining star. Her home is just as full of life as her heart—with three dogs, five cats, fifteen chickens, six guinea hens, and two turkeys!

When she’s not caring for others, Ruby enjoys spending time in her garden. She tends to a large vegetable garden along with a few smaller flower gardens that bring her peace and happiness.

Fun facts about Ruby:
🥔 Favorite food: Mashed potatoes
🍯 Favorite condiment: Honey mustard
🗄️ Collector at heart: She has a whole cabinet dedicated to her knick-knack collection

We’re so grateful to have Ruby on our team and for the warmth and care she brings to both her patients and colleagues every day.

Staff Highlight: Brittney Weber, RN Case Manager

Brittney has been a nurse for 10 years, with 8 of those spent in a trauma ER setting. She has been with Prairie Wind Hospice for a little over two years.

She finds the most meaning in being present with patients and their families at the end of life, helping create a sense of peace and comfort during such an important time. Brittney enjoys celebrating milestones, whether that means throwing birthday parties, bringing treats, or simply finding small ways to bring joy to her patients. She deeply values the connections she builds and feels honored to walk alongside patients and families on their journey. She is also passionate about educating others on what hospice entails and how to work together to ensure a peaceful, supported experience.

Outside of work, Brittney enjoys needlepointing, reading, spending time with her cats, traveling, shopping estate sales, doing puzzles, and playing darts.

She has been with her husband for six years, and together they share their home with two cats, Harley (a tabby) and Otis (an orange cat), who definitely run the household—and have an impressive collection of around 50 bandanas. Brittney and her husband love exploring new countries and trying cuisines from around the world. She enjoys decorating her home with unique treasures and is always on the hunt for a good bargain. A passionate reader, she finished 203 books last year and is aiming to surpass that this year. She also loves the Christmas season, going all out with four themed trees, including a main tree decorated with ornaments collected from their travels.

We are grateful to Brittney for her compassion, dedication, and the meaningful difference she makes in the lives of our patients and their families every day!

At Prairie Wind Hospice, we know how important it is to hold onto meaningful memories after the loss of a loved one.

Our 🧸Memory Bear Program 🧸 provides families with a special keepsake—each bear is handmade by a volunteer using clothing from your loved one, creating a tangible reminder of the love and memories you shared.

Each bear is crafted with care, compassion, and respect. Families receive one Memory Bear at no cost, with the option to request additional bears if desired.

These bears often become cherished reminders, offering comfort during a difficult time.

If you would like more information about the Memory Bear Program or how to become a volunteer, please feel free to reach out.
