A timely map for how we make our way through difficult and uncertain times. Thank you, Elena Mikhalkova.

My grandmother once gave me a tip:
In difficult times, you move forward in small steps.
Do what you have to do, but little by little.
Don't think about the future, or what may happen tomorrow.
Wash the dishes.
Remove the dust.
Write a letter.
Make a soup.
You see?
You are advancing step by step.
Take a step and stop.
Rest a little.
Praise yourself.
Take another step.
Then another.
You won't notice, but your steps will grow more and more.
And the time will come when you can think about the future without crying.

I awakened this morning from a round of unsettling dreams to an overcast day. As I shed the residue of the night and the grogginess of sleep, I began to realize that my community is about two weeks into the world of self quarantine, shelter in place, physical distancing,...and it isn't fun anymore.

Oh, I know it may have never been fun, as in your favorite thing to do. I mean fun more in the sense of that thing you committed to do at least once, just so you could say you did it. Or the thing someone double dog dared you to do, and so of course you were going to do it. How could you not? But then, before you were done,...maybe way before you were done, it wasn't fun anymore. Now maybe it was hard, painful, uncertain, and scary. If you were lucky maybe it was just boring.

And then it dawned on me how often it is in that space where we begin to grow. May we be committed to growing through our hard places.

What really causes addiction -- to everything from co***ne to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do -- and if there m...
