Step aside, Gatsby, our residents threw their own 1920’s speakeasy night and it was the cat’s meow! ✨ A hidden door with a password set the mood, followed by a photo station decked out with handmade props: fake ci**rs, moonshine boxes, long cigarette extenders, pearls, and even “wanted” posters featuring our residents. (Betty P. was caught running an underground bingo with goldfish crackers 🐟🎲).

The night was brought to life with dazzling live entertainment from Katie, and while we had card tables ready, no one could resist the dance floor. 💃🕺

We loaded up on popcorn, filled our brackets with playoff predictions, and dove into some football trivia. Add in great conversations about teams and players, and you’ve got a touchdown kind of night. 🙌

We’re continuing strong with our Around the World program, and this week we landed in France! 🇫🇷

From engaging trivia and cultural comparisons to a tasting and refreshment table, our residents got a true flavor of French culture.

As photos of France filled the room, several residents shared personal stories from their own travels. Four had visited France, and their memories sparked wonderful conversations and questions from the group.

These weekly journeys remind us that learning, sharing, and connecting can take us places—without ever leaving home. 🌍✨

Every click brings us closer to awareness. 💜

is a national creative campaign by Spectrum Retirement senior living communities to support Alzheimer's Association. Through hand-painted umbrellas, we’re raising visibility for Alzheimer’s and celebrating the power of community art.

Shawnee Hills Senior Living designed this Artbrella as a radiant expression of unity and storytelling. Each panel is painted in beautifully blended colors—each hue representing a different life chapter, coming together as one. Alongside the artwork, our residents created an original poem titled “The Light Behind the Artbrella”:

In the story of memory loss,
color runs through all lines.
Though names may dim and moments lost,
Each smile is worth the cost.
This painted umbrella still shines.
The mind may lose its way,
But love and light will always stay.

Created by Jillian Dannar DEP, Sandra Thomas, and Virginia Tummons, with poetic contributions from Dot, Sandra, Lilly, and Linda, this umbrella is a heartfelt tribute from the MINDS of Shawnee Hills. We’re competing to win our regional round and move into the Final Four!

Why do we retire a flag? Because honoring what it represents matters.

At Shawnee Hills, our residents joined American Legion Post 327 in a ceremonial Flag Retirement, carefully deconstructing and burning the flag in accordance with tradition. Afterward, we took the ashes to the cemetery and scattered them on Veterans’ graves—an act of remembrance that connected generations.

Purpose, patriotism, and pride—woven into every step.
