๐ŸŒŸEmployee Spotlight - Nicole Gasser, RN ๐ŸŒŸ

Nicole is Dr Jains' right hand gal but you'll also see her in the treatment room or helping room patients. Nicole has been a huge help in Dr Jains' transition here at SCBS!

๐ŸŸฃHow long have you worked at SCBS?
It was 3 years in April.

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite part about working at SCBS?
I love getting to build relationships with our patients and caring for them in their hardest times.

๐ŸŸฃWhat made you decide to get into healthcare?
I didn't really have a pivotal event that made me decide to become a nurse, I feel like I just always wanted to.

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Spend time with my family and kids. I don't have much free time with a 2-year-old and 9-month-old but when I do get some free time, I love to read.

๐ŸŸฃAs a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
For as long as I can remember it was a nurse, with a brief time of teacher.

๐ŸŸฃIf you could remove one food from Earth and never see it again, what would it be and why?
Hmmmm, the first thing that came to my mind was beets. I have always hated beets . Once when I worked in a nursing home, I had a resident throw them at me. It was the one and only time I had white scrubs on.

๐ŸŒŸEmployee Spotlight - Abigail "Abbey" Lisowe, MLS(ASCP) ๐ŸŒŸ

Abbey works hard in our second floor labroatory. She's part of the team that process all the blood (and other) samples from SCBS and SIMA. We'd be lost without them and their hard work day after day!

๐ŸŸฃHow long have you worked at SCBS?
June marks my one year anniversary!

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite part about working at SCBS?
I love the small clinic feel. Even though I don't have patient contact, seeing patient's names over and over again on samples makes me feel more involved in their care which you don't get working at a large lab. Working with my sister, Amanda Fritz, is fun, too.

๐ŸŸฃWhat made you decide to get into healthcare?
All of my sisters were working or going to school for something in the medical field, so I did too. I started out majoring in radiation therapy, but I took an intro into clinical lab science class and quickly changed my major to that.

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my husband and kids. My kids are at the fun ages of 1 and 3.5 so I love getting to see them find joy and excitement in everything. This summer you will most likely find us hiking, gardening, or spending time with extended family.

๐ŸŸฃWhatโ€™s your favorite vacation youโ€™ve ever been on?
After graduating college, my friends and I went to Greece and Italy for 2.5 weeks. It was my last hurrah before entering the workforce, and I have so many great memories from the trip. I would encourage any new grad to go on a long vacation before starting your career.

๐ŸŸฃWhatโ€™s our go-to coffee/drink order?
Caramel Frappuccino

๐ŸŽ—May Is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month

Skin cancer is cancer that starts as a growth of cells on the skin. The cells can invade and destroy healthy body tissue. Many kinds of skin cancer exist. The most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. While these are the most common, they often can be cured. The most dangerous form of skin cancer is melanoma. It is more likely to spread, making it harder to cure.

Most skin cancers happen on parts of the body that get a lot of sun. This includes the scalp, face, lips and ears. Other parts of the body that might get sun include the arms, backs of the hands, back and legs.
Skin cancer also can happen on skin that typically doesn't get sun. This includes the palms of the hands, the ge****ls, and under the fingernails and toenails.

Factors that may increase the risk of skin cancer include:
โ–ช๏ธSkin that sunburns easily.
Anyone of any skin color can get skin cancer. But the risk is higher in people with skin that sunburns easily. The risk of skin cancer also is higher in people who have blond or red hair, light-colored eyes or freckles.
Light from the sun.
Ultraviolet light from the sun increases the risk of skin cancer. Covering the skin with clothes or sunblock can help lower the risk.
Light from tanning beds.
People who use indoor tanning beds have an increased risk of skin cancer. The lights used in tanning beds give off harmful ultraviolet light.
A history of sunburns.
Having had one or more sunburns that raised blisters increases the risk of developing skin cancer. If the sunburns happened during childhood, they increase the risk of getting skin cancer as an adult even more.
A history of skin cancer.
People who've had skin cancer once are much more likely to get it again.
A family history of skin cancer.
If a blood relative, such as a parent or sibling, had skin cancer, you may be more likely to get skin cancer.
A weakened immune system.
If the body's germ-fighting immune system is weakened by medicine or disease, there might be a higher risk of skin cancer. People with weakened immune systems include those taking medicine to control the immune system, such as after an organ transplant. Some health conditions, such as HIV infection, also can weaken the immune system.

๐Ÿ“‹Most skin cancers can be prevented by protecting yourself from the sun. To lower the risk of skin cancer you can:

โœ”๏ธStay out of the sun during the middle of the day. For much of North America, the sun's rays are strongest between about 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Plan outdoor activities at other times of the day. When outside, stay in shade as much as possible.
โœ”๏ธWear sunscreen year-round. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. Apply sunscreen generously. Apply again every two hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.
โœ”๏ธWear protective clothing. Wear dark, tightly woven clothes that cover your arms and legs. โœ”๏ธWear a wide-brimmed hat that shades your face and ears. Don't forget sunglasses.
โœ”๏ธDon't use tanning beds. The lights in tanning beds give off ultraviolet light. Using tanning beds increases the risk of skin cancer.
โœ”๏ธCheck your skin often and report changes to your healthcare team. Look at your skin often for new growths. Look for changes in moles, freckles, bumps and birthmarks. Use mirrors to check your face, neck, ears and scalp.
Look at your chest and trunk and the tops and undersides of your arms and hands. Look at the front and back of your legs and your feet. Look at the bottom of the feet and the spaces between your toes.

As always, please contact your primary physician with any questions or concerns

๐ŸŒŸEmployee Spotlight - Tammy Verhulst, R.N. ๐ŸŒŸ

Tammy is one of our "floating" nurses. You might see her in the treatment room or up front in the clinic rooming patients. No matter which roll she's in, Tammy does a great job! ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸŸฃHow long have you worked at SCBS?
This past February was 4 years. (Cathy actually messaged me on Christmas Eve to ask if I wanted to work here.)

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite part about working at SCBS?
The work/ life balance. The flexibility I get and the care of my coworkers in order to care of my family.

๐ŸŸฃWhat made you decide to get into healthcare?
At the time I was doing what my sister said she wanted to do. Soon after, I found out that I love to take care of people.

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I like to spend time with my family. I don't like the cold weather, so when it's not in the 70's or higher I like to watch movies, putting together puzzles and reading. When the weather permits, I like to explore the outdoors, go to the beach, garden, camping, or anything else my grandson can convince me to do.

๐ŸŸฃWhatโ€™s a useless fact youโ€™ve always remembered?
Not sure I can remember any useless facts while thinking about it, but I'm sure I'm do say a lot of useless things during the course of the day. However, my grandson comes up with these things from YOUTUBE like, "Did you know that chipmunk's teeth keep growing and that's why they have to keep chewing on things so their teeth don't get too long?". ๐Ÿ˜†

๐ŸŸฃDo you have any family traditions for holidays?
Not sure we have any specific Holiday traditions. We do however have a yearly summer camping trip/ family reunion that we spend with moms extended family at Kastle Rock County Park that has been for over 30 years. Some stay for the weekend, some the whole week.

Bladder Cancer. These two words deliver a devastating impact. It is the 9th most commonly diagnosed cancer and the 13th cause of death from cancer globally. But, a timely diagnosis significantly increases the chance of long-term survival and quality of life. We need to get people talking about this important statistic and we need them to share this fact. World Bladder Cancer Awareness month in May is a chance for us to do exactly that.

Bladder cancer is a common type of cancer that begins in the cells of the bladder. Bladder cancer most often begins in the cells (urothelial cells) that line the inside of your bladder. Urothelial cells are also found in your kidneys and the tubes (ureters) that connect the kidneys to the bladder. Urothelial cancer can happen in the kidneys and ureters, too, but it's much more common in the bladder.

Most bladder cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, when the cancer is highly treatable. But even early-stage bladder cancers can come back after successful treatment. For this reason, people with bladder cancer typically need follow-up tests for years after treatment to look for bladder cancer that recurs.

Bladder cancer signs and symptoms may include:
โ—๏ธBlood in urine (hematuria), which may cause urine to appear bright red or cola colored, though sometimes the urine appears normal and blood is detected on a lab test
Frequent urination
Painful urination
Back pain

If you notice that you have discolored urine and are concerned it may contain blood, make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked.

Also make an appointment with your doctor if you have other signs or symptoms that worry you.

๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐Ÿ”ฌ
Bladder cancer begins when cells in the bladder develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. A cell's DNA contains instructions that tell the cell what to do. The changes tell the cell to multiply rapidly and to go on living when healthy cells would die. The abnormal cells form a tumor that can invade and destroy normal body tissue. In time, the abnormal cells can break away and spread (metastasize) through the body.

Different types of cells in your bladder can become cancerous. The type of bladder cell where cancer begins determines the type of bladder cancer. Doctors use this information to determine which treatments may work best for you.

Types of bladder cancer include:
๐™๐™ง๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ก๐™ž๐™–๐™ก ๐™˜๐™–๐™ง๐™˜๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ข๐™–
Urothelial carcinoma, previously called transitional cell carcinoma, occurs in the cells that line the inside of the bladder. Urothelial cells expand when your bladder is full and contract when your bladder is empty. These same cells line the inside of the ureters and the urethra, and cancers can form in those places as well. Urothelial carcinoma is the most common type of bladder cancer in the United States.

Squamous cell carcinoma is associated with chronic irritation of the bladder โ€” for instance, from an infection or from long-term use of a urinary catheter. Squamous cell bladder cancer is rare in the United States. It's more common in parts of the world where a certain parasitic infection (schistosomiasis) is a common cause of bladder infections.

Adenocarcinoma begins in cells that make up mucus-secreting glands in the bladder. Adenocarcinoma of the bladder is very rare.

Factors that may increase bladder cancer risk include:
โ—๏ธSmoking ci******es, ci**rs or pipes may increase the risk of bladder cancer by causing harmful chemicals to accumulate in the urine. When you smoke, your body processes the chemicals in the smoke and excretes some of them in your urine. These harmful chemicals may damage the lining of your bladder, which can increase your risk of cancer.
Increasing age. Bladder cancer risk increases as you age. Though it can occur at any age, most people diagnosed with bladder cancer are older than 55.
Being male. Men are more likely to develop bladder cancer than women are.
Exposure to certain chemicals. Your kidneys play a key role in filtering harmful chemicals from your bloodstream and moving them into your bladder. Because of this, it's thought that being around certain chemicals may increase the risk of bladder cancer. Chemicals linked to bladder cancer risk include arsenic and chemicals used in the manufacture of dyes, rubber, leather, textiles and paint products.
Previous cancer treatment. Treatment with the anti-cancer drug cyclophosphamide increases the risk of bladder cancer. People who received radiation treatments aimed at the pelvis for a previous cancer have a higher risk of developing bladder cancer.
Chronic bladder inflammation. Chronic or repeated urinary infections or inflammations (cystitis), such as might happen with long-term use of a urinary catheter, may increase the risk of a squamous cell bladder cancer. In some areas of the world, squamous cell carcinoma is linked to chronic bladder inflammation caused by the parasitic infection known as schistosomiasis.
Personal or family history of cancer. If you've had bladder cancer, you're more likely to get it again. If one of your blood relatives โ€” a parent, sibling or child โ€” has a history of bladder cancer, you may have an increased risk of the disease, although it's rare for bladder cancer to run in families. A family history of Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), can increase the risk of cancer in the urinary system, as well as in the colon, uterus, ovaries and other organs.

Although there's no guaranteed way to prevent bladder cancer, you can take steps to help reduce your risk.
๐Ÿ’›Don't smoke. If you don't smoke, don't start. If you smoke, talk to your doctor about a plan to help you stop.
๐Ÿ’›Take caution around chemicals. If you work with chemicals, follow all safety instructions to avoid exposure.
๐Ÿ’›Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables may help reduce your risk of cancer.

As always, speak to your primary care provider for any questions or concerns you may have.

๐ŸŒŸEmployee Spotlight - Sara Marver, MA ๐ŸŒŸ

You will see Sara making the schedules for Dr Bettag and Amy Clark, NP. She's the one making sure you're coming back on time for treatment, scans and appointments. ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸŸฃHow long have you worked at SCBS?
9 years

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite part about working at SCBS?
I love our patients. It brings me joy to know I am helping people in their journey.

๐ŸŸฃWhat made you decide to get into healthcare?
It was actually by accident. I never thought I could work in health care. I worked at a factory for 8 years and was laid off due to the economy at the time. I was enrolled in a displaced workers program at LTC and the only program available was Medical Assistant. I fell in love with helping people. It was a truly a blessing in disguise.

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
My favorite thing to do outside of work is spending time with my family; especially my new grandson Amari and my dogs.

๐ŸŸฃWhat is your favorite memory from the last year?
My favorite memory from this last year is definitely the day my grandson was born. I was able to be in the room. It was the most emotional and most special day of my life this year.

๐ŸŸฃWhat is the best piece of advice you've been given in your life so far?
Slow down and smell the roses. I have been using this advice recently just to remember to take time and enjoy life and realize not every single thing needs to be done every single second of every day. It's ok to let some things go and enjoy time in the present, especially with our loved ones. Time goes by so fast, and I want to make as many memories as possible with my son, daughter in law and my grandson.
