I remember asking that when I had my first massage. 😬
Yes, we feel things. The hands from the first touch are assessing. When I start with the sheet on and compress and then start applying oil, I intuitively start a map in my head of what things feels like. I notice what it feels like on one side and then how it feels on the other side. Relax and pay attention to what your therapist is doing. Speak up if theres a spot that you feel is a problem area. I can tell by your tissue if it feels tight or if it might feel tender but if i had 1 magic wish it would be to feel exactly.what you feel when Im massaging you. Every body's pain is different. The amount of pressure each person can handle is different.
Alot of what we do is based on patterns. Many people have similar issues. Its not in our scope of practice to diagnosis or tell you why things feel the way they do. We assess, we find the spots, we use all the knowledge of the classes we've taken, the countless bodies we've worked on , modalities we've learned in all the years and intuitively do what we think is best. Every Massage is different. Every Massage Therapist is different. But no one should be touching you for 30 seconds and telling you whats wrong with you.
If you dont speak up and want a more relaxing massage with some therapitic work, I do that.
If you want more specific work, just communicate with me how things are feeling.
But just remember... Im "just" a massage therapist. Not a doctor. I dont have Xray vision. I will relax you and touch what hurts and if you leave feeling better... yay!
