Scientists say it's too late for these glowing insects to bounce back.

A major new study shows that fireflies are experiencing a mass die-off. Populations are declining sharply around the globe.

Once a summer staple, they are vanishing from many landscapes due to human activity — primarily because of habitat loss, climate change, pesticide use, and artificial lighting.

These glowing insects thrive in moist environments like salt marshes and wooded areas with standing water—places increasingly threatened by urban development. Some rare species, like Delaware’s Bethany Beach firefly, are especially at risk due to their highly localized habitats.

But we can still save insects. Turn off outside lights. Stop using pesticides. And don't cut your grass — let it grow naturally.

✨The glow is fading, but we still have time to protect the light. Let’s not wait until it’s gone.
