How we care for ourselves, or how we ignore our wellbeing, influences the way we care for others. How can we encourage and teach our patients to care for themselves if we don’t do that for ourselves?

The whole arena of self-care is vast, but what we’re going to hone in on in this episode is specifically that Osteopathic care of the Osteopath. As an Osteopath, do we get treated Osteopathically?

If you’re an experienced Osteopath, especially if you’re involved in teaching, here’s a companion question to ponder, “How do we model self-care to the young Osteopaths that we teach?”

In this episode, we take a dive into exploring the possibilities of why and how as Osteopath we might want to seriously consider choosing to be cared for by one of our colleagues.

Osteopathy is so much more than the American Four Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine. I am continuing the international discussion on creating a concise "definition" of Osteopathy that can be applied in education, with insurance companies, and with governmental organizations. Read my complete essay that deconstructs the "old" tenets and explains my proposed new and improved Six Tenets. I welcome you input.

Ok, we are going to take on another interesting topic that many Osteopaths and non-Osteopaths use frequently--the use of the word "RELEASE." We think that a release could be a fallacy or a distortion when working with the body osteopathically. Please become a subscriber and join the discussion called Osteopathy Unplugged.

I want to return to a discussion of the American Four Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine. Are they a true reflection of our work as Osteopaths? I would say no.

In our most recent podcast we discuss the Four Tenets in great detail in our "op-ed" or opinion piece on this important topic.

Please listen to the entire FREE episode and post your comments and we can talk about it.

New FREE EPISODE from Osteopathy Unplugged.

Is it acceptable to challenge the status quo in Osteopathy?

Are we allowed to question doctrines established by professional organizations?

Can we ask the greater Osteopathic profession around the world:

“What would Still do?”

"Would Dr. Still approve of our modern interpretation of his work?"

"Would Andrew delight in our expansion of his interpretation of Osteopathy or would he disapprove?"

"Would he sanction the modern actions of the American Osteopathic Association?"

I'd like to keep the discussion going.

Osteopathy is NOT a collection of techniques.

There is no Osteopathy without Osteopathic Manipulation.

We are NOT just a philosophy.

We are defined by how we use our clinical philosophy. It is our problem solving skills that makes us distinct.

We apply our distinct problem solving skills by combining Osteopathic Manipulation with Osteopathic Clinical Philosophy.

In our next podcast, we will be addressing the complicated issue of our weak Four Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine. We deconstruct the problems with the Four Tenets and present why we need to make changes in our public philosophy—now. We believe that everyone who has joined the discussion surrounding Osteopathy around the world, will enjoy our insights and perspective.

*Here it is, our core problem: The Four Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine.

I have read the many posts about the political problems with Osteopathy around the world. And several solutions have been offered, let's review:

1. Yes, we desperately need more research on the efficacy of Osteopathic Manipulation. We are behind and somewhat backward regarding the clinical science of what we do.

2. Yes, we desperately need national and international recognition, licensure defense, delineation of practice rights and privileges.

3. Yes, we need better insurance reimbursement and we need our professional organizations to step up and defend our ability to get paid.

BUT, in my opinion, the core issue is the anemic Four Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine. They are not a true reflection of A. T. Still's clinical philosophy. They are not distinct. They are not inclusive. They are not many things.

Bonnie Gintis, DO and I will devote our entire next podcast deconstruction the uninspiring Four Tenets. We strongly encourage DOs to listen to this and our many other episodes and join the discussion.
