Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition

Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition I help people with chronic health challenges reclaim their lives without drugs or surgery via a multi-modal natural healthcare approach. Dr. Karl R.O.S.

I offer a caring and compassionate, yet no-nonsense approach to core level healing of the underlying malfunctions that lead to poor health. join me on your journey to healing. In 1983, Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, a chiropractor and clinical nutritionist in Shelby Township, MI, followed his heart into the health field. Now hundreds of chronic condition patients in southeastern, Michigan have the relie

f and quality of life that most chronically ill patients hope and wish for, but seldom get. Unlike some who just ‘wander’ into the health profession and make a place for themselves, Dr. Johnson recalls how he was ‘drawn’ into the health field, it was his calling, his destiny. Before starting down his formal education path, Dr. Johnson had met many people and formed great relationships with individuals who he felt had the answers to his questions. Questions about health and healing, and why did the current “health care” system ignore the foundations of health. Time has really flown since Dr. Johnson graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1983. He has met many wonderful people and has been blessed with a busy practice and a wonderful team of assistants. Now more than ever he finds it exciting to be a doctor of chiropractic and a clinical nutritionist. For years there has been a resistance to natural healing methods by others who were not yet enlightened by its benefits. Acceptance of methods complimentary to traditional medical care is at an all time high and as a result more and more people are seeking alternatives to drugs and surgery. His passion for helping people and learning about the principles that underlie the foundations for health is at an all time high. Patients with chronic conditions (fibromyalgia, vertigo and other balance disorders, peripheral neuropathy, migraines, hypothyroidism, severe back, leg, neck and arm pain, ADD, ADHD, Autism, autoimmune disorders, etc.) from all over southeast Michigan flock to the Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition because of Dr. Johnson’s whole-person, patient-centered, functional neurological, structural and metabolic approach. Most patients know intuitively that there must be more to helping their chronic condition besides simply trying to patch it up with drugs, and with Dr. Johnson they get that complete functional approach that creates the vitality and quality of life they deserve. Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. and was voted to serve as the Vice President of the Pi Tau Delta Delta (an international chiropractic honorary society, open to the top 15 percent of the graduating class who have maintained a 3.50 cumulative GPA, have never withdrawn from a class or have never received less than a grade 3 for any quality grade while at Palmer. Invitations to Pi Tau Delta are issued during the final academic term.) At Palmer College of Chiropractic I began my intense study of neurology that I knew would allow me to serve my patients at a high level. Chiropractic Neurology is the newest, state of the art diagnostic and treatment technique. It brings together research findings from the fields of psychology, neuropsychiatry, neurology, neurophysiology, and nutrition — and used this knowledge to bring hope to the sick, unhappy, and hurting of all ages. Dr. Johnson states, "As a chiropractic physician, I strive to provide the finest care possible and provide an optimum environment for healing. Using the latest diagnostic tests to find the cause of your pain, suffering or ill health, it is possible to design a plan of care to get you back to your favorite activities fast. In my practice, you’ll discover a complete array of services for your entire family. Through a great number of continuing education courses, I have been very careful to master the newest and most effective techniques in chiropractic rehabilitative and wellness services as well as nutritional therapy. The procedures used in my practice are well suited for all ages from infancy to the elderly. Chiropractic is a quickly advancing field and I believe it takes dedication, diligence and just plain hard work to keep up. But I feel I must for the good of my patients." My personal free time is spent training for distance charitable cycling events (such as the MS Bike), a pursuit I picked up after one of my patients encouraged me to participate in my first 200 mile bike ride over two decades ago. I have completed 26 such rides on the western side of Michigan and even participated in a team triathalon where my team came in first place for the age group. I am the proud parent of 3 young adults, and am happily married to my wife Sandra. I also love to learn and study about health, the human body, success principles, and science. I enjoy gardening, healthy eating, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, photography and sight seeing.

Quiz: Are You Lectin-Sensitive?

Springtime allergens (primarily tree and grass pollen) can worsen lectin sensitivity in many people.

Lectins are natural carbohydrate-binding proteins found in many common plant foods, including grains, legumes (beans and lentils), nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes), and corn. While they serve as a defense mechanism for plants, lectins can resist digestion in some people and bind to the lining of the gut, potentially triggering inflammation, increased intestinal permeability, and a range of uncomfortable symptoms. Sensitivity to lectins varies widely from person to person and can be amplified by individual factors such as gut health, immune balance, and — importantly — your blood type, as certain lectins interact more strongly with specific blood group antigens.

Spring pollen exposure drives a strong Th2 immune response, elevating cytokines like IL-4 and IL-13. These promote IgE antibody production, mast cell sensitization, and overall inflammation.

When your immune system is already primed this way, it becomes hyper-reactive. Dietary lectins (from grains, beans, nightshades, corn, etc.) can then act as additional triggers, indirectly activating mast cells and basophils, leading to histamine release and amplified inflammation. This creates a perfect storm in which normal lectin-containing meals cause more noticeable symptoms (bloating, fatigue, joint pain, skin issues, and heightened pollen reactions).

This 15-question self-assessment uses a simple 1–5 scale to help you gauge your personal level of lectin reactivity. It considers digestive issues, systemic symptoms, pollen sensitivities, reactions to grains/corn, and family history. Combined with your blood type, the results offer personalized insights aligned with the Blood Type Diet principles. Remember, this is for educational and experimental purposes only — not a medical diagnosis.

🪑 **One reason too much sitting may be unhealthy:** it could affect your body’s fluid balance in ways that matter for cardiovascular health. 💧❤️

One marker researchers have looked at is **serum osmolality**, which reflects the concentration of dissolved particles in the liquid portion of the blood and helps indicate hydration and electrolyte balance. When serum osmolality is higher, it has been associated with less favorable cardiovascular outcomes. 📊

A recent study suggests that **the more time people spend sitting, the higher their serum osmolality may become**. Possible reasons include drinking less water, consuming more diuretic beverages, putting off bathroom breaks, and experiencing blood sugar increases from frequent snacking while sedentary. 🥤⏳🍪

In other words, prolonged sitting may do more than reduce physical activity—it may also contribute to internal changes that can negatively influence **cardiometabolic health** over time. That’s one more reason to build more movement, hydration, and regular breaks into the day. 🚶‍♂️💦⏰

🥗 **Healthier eating habits may play an important role in supporting long-term colon health.** A large international study involving nearly **1 million adults** found that people who followed a diet rich in **fruits and vegetables 🍎🥦, especially leafy greens, legumes, dairy, coffee ☕, and tea 🍵** had a **lower risk of colorectal cancer**. The same study also found that lower intake of **red and processed meats, along with sugary drinks 🥤,** was linked to better outcomes.

These findings are another reminder that everyday food choices can have a meaningful impact on overall wellness. Prioritizing more whole, nutrient-dense foods and reducing heavily processed options may be a simple but powerful step toward better health over time. 🌿✨

💗 Women may face serious heart risks at lower plaque levels than men—a finding that highlights why heart health deserves personalized attention. Atherosclerosis, the hardening and narrowing of the arteries, can quietly progress over time and increase the risk of dangerous blockages if not addressed. 🫀

A recent study found that women’s risk of heart attack or hospitalization for chest pain may begin at a lower level of arterial blockage than men—about 20% compared with 28%. 📊 This suggests that commonly used risk thresholds may not always reflect the true level of concern for women and reinforces the importance of sex-specific prevention strategies and earlier awareness. 🚨

Understanding these differences can help support more informed conversations about cardiovascular wellness, screening, and prevention. Knowledge is power when it comes to protecting long-term health. 🌿

🧠 **Mitochondria may help explain how psychological stress affects brain and mental health.**

Mitochondria are the tiny energy producers inside our cells, responsible for creating ATP—the fuel that helps the body and brain function properly. ⚡ In a recent study, researchers found that psychological stress may interfere with mitochondrial function, which can disrupt energy metabolism, increase inflammation, and alter important brain signaling pathways.

These changes may be connected to a wide range of mental and neurological health challenges, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, Alzheimer’s disease, and other disorders affecting brain function. 🧩 This growing area of research offers a deeper understanding of how chronic stress can influence both emotional well-being and long-term brain health.

The findings also highlight something encouraging: regular physical activity may help support healthier mitochondrial function and, in turn, reduce some mental health symptoms. 🚶‍♂️💪 Supporting the body’s energy systems may be one important way to support the brain as well.

🧠 Chiropractic care may play an important role in supporting people with spinal pain while helping reduce the likelihood of long-term opioid use.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 2 randomized clinical trials and 18 cohort studies found that patients who received chiropractic care for spinal pain were **73% less likely to become long-term opioid users**. The association was even stronger among those who began chiropractic care within the first 30 days of pain onset. 📉

This research highlights the value of early, conservative care as part of a thoughtful approach to spinal health, recovery, and long-term wellness. At JCNN, we believe patients deserve options that support function, mobility, and quality of life. 💙

Lifelong exercise may do more than support strength and mobility—it may also play an important role in lowering the risk of metabolic syndrome 💪🧠

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors that can include central obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and elevated blood sugar. When these occur together, they can raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

In a long-term cohort study of 159 participants, researchers found that individuals who exercised throughout life were **4 times less likely** to have metabolic syndrome at age 61 compared with sedentary peers 📉

Even more encouraging: adults who were inactive earlier in life but became physically active in midlife were able to reduce their future risk by about half—especially when resistance training was included 🏋️‍♀️✨

The takeaway? It is never too late to start moving. Consistent physical activity, including strength training, may offer meaningful long-term benefits for metabolic health, energy, and overall well-being.

🌿 **Diet May Influence Skin Cancer Risk** ☀️

When most people think about melanoma risk, ultraviolet (UV) exposure is usually the first factor that comes to mind. However, emerging research suggests that nutrition may also play a meaningful role in overall skin health. 🥗☕

A recent narrative review reported that greater adherence to Mediterranean and DASH-style eating patterns, along with a higher intake of anti-inflammatory foods and coffee consumption, was associated with a lower risk of melanoma. In contrast, Western-style dietary patterns and alcohol intake may be linked to a higher skin cancer risk. 🍓🥬🫒

While more research is still needed to better understand these relationships, these findings offer another reminder that daily food choices can influence health in more ways than many people realize. Making thoughtful nutrition decisions may support not only internal wellness, but skin health as well. 💡
