Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition

Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition I help people with chronic health challenges reclaim their lives without drugs or surgery via a multi-modal natural healthcare approach. Dr. Karl R.O.S.

I offer a caring and compassionate, yet no-nonsense approach to core level healing of the underlying malfunctions that lead to poor health. join me on your journey to healing. In 1983, Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, a chiropractor and clinical nutritionist in Shelby Township, MI, followed his heart into the health field. Now hundreds of chronic condition patients in southeastern, Michigan have the relief and quality of life that most chronically ill patients hope and wish for, but seldom get. Unlike some who just ‘wander’ into the health profession and make a place for themselves, Dr. Johnson recalls how he was ‘drawn’ into the health field, it was his calling, his destiny. Before starting down his formal education path, Dr. Johnson had met many people and formed great relationships with individuals who he felt had the answers to his questions. Questions about health and healing, and why did the current “health care” system ignore the foundations of health. Time has really flown since Dr. Johnson graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1983. He has met many wonderful people and has been blessed with a busy practice and a wonderful team of assistants. Now more than ever he finds it exciting to be a doctor of chiropractic and a clinical nutritionist. For years there has been a resistance to natural healing methods by others who were not yet enlightened by its benefits. Acceptance of methods complimentary to traditional medical care is at an all time high and as a result more and more people are seeking alternatives to drugs and surgery. His passion for helping people and learning about the principles that underlie the foundations for health is at an all time high. Patients with chronic conditions (fibromyalgia, vertigo and other balance disorders, peripheral neuropathy, migraines, hypothyroidism, severe back, leg, neck and arm pain, ADD, ADHD, Autism, autoimmune disorders, etc.) from all over southeast Michigan flock to the Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition because of Dr. Johnson’s whole-person, patient-centered, functional neurological, structural and metabolic approach. Most patients know intuitively that there must be more to helping their chronic condition besides simply trying to patch it up with drugs, and with Dr. Johnson they get that complete functional approach that creates the vitality and quality of life they deserve. Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. and was voted to serve as the Vice President of the Pi Tau Delta Delta (an international chiropractic honorary society, open to the top 15 percent of the graduating class who have maintained a 3.50 cumulative GPA, have never withdrawn from a class or have never received less than a grade 3 for any quality grade while at Palmer. Invitations to Pi Tau Delta are issued during the final academic term.) At Palmer College of Chiropractic I began my intense study of neurology that I knew would allow me to serve my patients at a high level. Chiropractic Neurology is the newest, state of the art diagnostic and treatment technique. It brings together research findings from the fields of psychology, neuropsychiatry, neurology, neurophysiology, and nutrition — and used this knowledge to bring hope to the sick, unhappy, and hurting of all ages. Dr. Johnson states, "As a chiropractic physician, I strive to provide the finest care possible and provide an optimum environment for healing. Using the latest diagnostic tests to find the cause of your pain, suffering or ill health, it is possible to design a plan of care to get you back to your favorite activities fast. In my practice, you’ll discover a complete array of services for your entire family. Through a great number of continuing education courses, I have been very careful to master the newest and most effective techniques in chiropractic rehabilitative and wellness services as well as nutritional therapy. The procedures used in my practice are well suited for all ages from infancy to the elderly. Chiropractic is a quickly advancing field and I believe it takes dedication, diligence and just plain hard work to keep up. But I feel I must for the good of my patients." My personal free time is spent training for distance charitable cycling events (such as the MS Bike), a pursuit I picked up after one of my patients encouraged me to participate in my first 200 mile bike ride over two decades ago. I have completed 26 such rides on the western side of Michigan and even participated in a team triathalon where my team came in first place for the age group. I am the proud parent of 3 young adults, and am happily married to my wife Sandra. I also love to learn and study about health, the human body, success principles, and science. I enjoy gardening, healthy eating, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, photography and sight seeing.

A Dark Side to Fitness and Diet Apps ⚖️📱

Fitness and diet apps can absolutely be helpful—many people use them to move more, eat better, and feel more in control of their health. But there’s a hidden downside that isn’t talked about enough.

A recent study found that there’s a tipping point where constant notifications, calorie counting, and rigid targets stop being motivating and start working against you. 🚨📊 When every “missed goal” is highlighted, users can begin to feel shame, disappointment, and even guilt around food and exercise—exactly the opposite of what supports long-term health.

Instead of feeling empowered, people may become obsessed with numbers, ignore their body’s signals, and eventually burn out or quit altogether. 😣💔

The takeaway: tools can be helpful, but they should never replace self-compassion, body awareness, and a balanced approach to health. 💚🧠 If your app is making you feel worse about yourself, it may be time to rethink how (or if) you use it.

Conservative, Hands-On Care for TMJ (Temporomandibular) Disorders

If you’re living with jaw pain, clicking, popping, or trouble opening your mouth fully, you’re not alone—and you’re not “stuck with it.”

A recent meta-analysis of ten clinical trials found that when patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD/TMJ) added manual therapies—like the hands-on techniques often used by chiropractors—to a conservative, multimodal treatment plan, they experienced meaningful improvements in jaw pain and in how wide they could comfortably open their mouths.

In other words, when gentle, targeted manual care is layered in with other conservative approaches (such as exercises, posture work, and lifestyle modifications), patients may see better function and less discomfort—without jumping straight to drugs or invasive procedures.

Patients with Chronic Conditions Move Less – and It Matters More Than You Think 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

An analysis of data from nearly 60,000 adults found that individuals with a single chronic condition (such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia) took about 340 fewer steps per day than those with no chronic conditions, while those with multiple conditions walked nearly 480 fewer steps daily. 📉

That might not sound like much at first glance, but over time it adds up. Imagine taking 300–500 fewer steps every day, week after week, month after month. That’s thousands of missed steps your body never gets to “cash in” for better circulation, healthier blood sugar, stronger joints, and a clearer mind. 💓🧠🦵

The results are especially worrisome because many people with chronic conditions already struggle to reach recommended physical-activity levels. When daily movement drops even further, it can become a vicious cycle:
- Pain, fatigue, or brain fog → you move less 😣
- Moving less → muscles weaken, joints stiffen, inflammation rises 💥
- Symptoms worsen → you feel even less like moving 🔄

Research has consistently shown that lower total daily steps are associated with worse health outcomes in people with chronic conditions. Even modest increases in movement—like a 5–10 minute walk after meals, parking a little farther away, or doing gentle mobility exercises at home—can begin to shift that trajectory in a more positive direction. 🚶‍♂️✨

If you’re living with a chronic condition and feel stuck in this cycle, you’re not alone—and it’s not a character flaw or “lack of willpower.” 🙏 There are often underlying neurologic, metabolic, or musculoskeletal factors making movement harder and more painful than it should be. The key is to identify and address those root causes so that movement becomes more comfortable and sustainable, not another exhausting chore on your to-do list. 🌱💪

For the first time in years, Diane feels comfortable in her own skin. ✨ She came to Michigan Brain Health exhausted from constantly “being on alert”—racing thoughts, tension she could never quite shake, and nights spent staring at the ceiling instead of sleeping. 😴💭

After completing a series of neurofeedback training sessions, something finally shifted. Her anxious thoughts have quieted, her sleep is deeper and more restorative, and she’s noticing her confidence returning in everyday moments—speaking up at work, enjoying time with family, and actually being present instead of stuck in her head. 🌙💆‍♀️💬

Neurofeedback doesn’t “knock you out” or change who you are—it helps retrain your brain’s patterns, almost like updating the software so it runs more smoothly. 🧠💻 Over time, many people report feeling calmer, clearer, and more in control instead of being ruled by stress and worry. 🌿

If constant worry has been running your life, what would it mean to finally feel calm, clear, and at ease in your own body again—to wake up without dread, fall asleep without a battle, and move through your day with more peace? 🌅💤💗

Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Have Role in Early Schizophrenia Treatment 🧠🐟

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that can disrupt how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. It often begins in late teens or early adulthood and may involve hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and a noticeable “flattening” of emotions. These changes can make work, school, and relationships extremely challenging—for both the person affected and their loved ones. 💬💔

Emerging research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids (the healthy fats found in foods like wild-caught fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts) may play a small but meaningful role when used alongside standard care, especially early in the course of the illness. 🐟🌱🥜

A meta-analysis of 16 clinical trials found that while omega-3 supplements provided limited benefits for schizophrenia overall, they appeared more helpful for individuals experiencing their first episode of the disorder. In these early-stage patients, longer-term omega-3 supplementation was associated with reduced symptom severity. 📊✅

This doesn’t mean omega-3s replace medications or therapy—but they may offer an additional, low-risk strategy to support brain health and symptom management when introduced early and used consistently as part of a comprehensive care plan. 🤝🧠

New research is challenging a long‑standing “rule” for thyroid meds. 🧠🦋

A randomized trial in the *Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism* found that patients with hypothyroidism who took a **15% higher dose of levothyroxine with breakfast** (instead of on an empty stomach) **maintained stable TSH levels** *and* reported **better overall well‑being** than those taking it while fasting. 🍳💊

In simple terms: for some patients, slightly adjusting the dose and taking levothyroxine *with* food may be just as effective—and possibly more comfortable—than the strict empty-stomach routine so many struggle with. 🙌

This doesn’t mean everyone should change how they take their medication. But it does highlight something important: ⚠️

- Your thyroid care can be **personalized** 🧬
- “One-size-fits-all” timing rules may not work for every body 🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️
- How and when you take your medication can affect how you *feel*, not just what your labs show 💓

If you’re on levothyroxine and dreading that early-morning empty-stomach window, this study may be a good conversation starter with your prescribing doctor about options that fit your real life while still supporting your thyroid health. 🕰️☕

Sobering stats on hip fractures you shouldn’t ignore. ⚠️🦴

In a 20-year study of 1,233 older adults, 236 suffered a hip fracture — and a staggering 27% died within just one year of the injury. A broken hip isn’t just “an unfortunate fall.” For many, it’s the event that steals independence, mobility, and quality of life. 🚑💔

Why does this matter? Because hip fractures are often preventable. ✅

Things like:
- Better balance and strength training 🏋️‍♀️🧘‍♂️
- Addressing neuropathy, chronic knee or back pain that alters gait 👣
- Improving reaction time and brain–body communication 🧠⚡
- Supporting bone health through nutrition and lifestyle 🥦💊

…can all dramatically reduce fall risk and improve recovery if a fracture does occur. ⬇️🤕

If you or someone you love is dealing with chronic pain, instability, or frequent “near falls,” don’t wait for a crisis. There are natural, non-surgical strategies that can improve balance, protect joints, and support your nervous system before a hip fracture changes everything. 🌿💪
