Our office can help eligible patients between 8-12 years old manage myopia (nearsightedness) through the use of specialized contact lenses. MiSight lenses are made to help both correct a child's vision and slow myopia progression. They are a soft, daily disposable. For more information about this treatment option, call our office at (586)580-2001 ext 1.

Studies have shown that having children spend time outdoors can help reduce the risk of myopia, otherwise known as being nearsighted. There is also evidence to support that time outside could also help in slowing the progression of myopia. We recommend the guidelines below. Check out the link to MyKidsVision.org for more information and resources!

1. When possible, try to have children and adolescents spend at least two hours outdoors.
2. Remember to have them use sun protection! It's not only important to wear sunscreen against UV light. You and your children should be protecting your eyes from sun damage with sunglasses. Just be sure to check that they block UV light. Not all sun glasses are effective protection.
3. Get their blood pumping! Being physically active for at least an hour has many benefits like improved cardiovascular health. It is important for those developing eyes to have healthy blood flow.

Spending time outdoors is beneficial for reducing myopia risk in children and has many other health benefits too.

May 19th - May 25th is Myopia Awareness Week. Myopia, commonly referred to as nearsightedness, is often diagnosed in childhood. It's Myopia Awareness Week. We wanted to let our patients with children know that there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of your child developing myopia. Myopia, also referred to as near sightedness, is when the eye elongates. This causes objects in the distance to become blurry. To reduce the risk or progression of myopia:

- Make sure your children spend 2 hours outside daily
- Limit screen time to 1-2 hours daily
- Have your child's vision checked annually

Myopia does not only increase the risk for glasses. Myopia is a progressive condition that continues to worsen as children grow. Myopic patients are at an elevated risk for conditions such as maculopathy, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. The risk for these conditions continues to increase along with the prescription strength. For more information about Myopia, including preventative measures, visit the link attached to this post.

Myopia Awareness Week is a chance to learn about myopia (nearsightedness) β€” a growing problem that can lead to serious eye problems later in life.

On April 8th we will be lucky enough to be near the path of totality for a solar eclipse. That means we will have close to a total eclipse where the sun's corona is visible. Remember: Do NOT look directly at the eclipse without proper protection! Looking at it can instantly cause severe eye injury. This link from NASA provides several tips and methods for safe viewing.

Eye Safety During a Total Solar Eclipse Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a...

We hope that all of our patients have a wonderful holiday weekend. Please don't forget to follow safety guidelines for any fireworks, firecrackers, and sparklers. In the event you or someone you know sustains a fireworks related eye injury:

- Call 911 immediately
- DO NOT: rub, rinse, or apply ointments to the injured eye
- If an object is stuck in the eye leave it alone until it can be assessed by a medical professional. Do not attempt to remove it.
- Avoid blood thinning medications for pain management (unless directed by a physician) such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

For more information about fireworks safety you can check out this article by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

The numbers are clear: Fireworks are dangerous and July 4 is an especially risky time for eye injuries. The most recent Consumer Product Safety Commission report found that 15% of fireworks injuries w
