Shelby Thyroid Answer Center If you are medically managed for a thyroid disorder (or suspect you have one) but still have recurrent body symptoms, this page is for you. You are frustrated.
(1)

YOU'VE RESEARCHED YOUR SYMPTOMS AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION YOU HAVE LOW THYROID SYMPTOMS. You even consulted your medical practitioner and he or she concurred and prescribed thyroid hormone replacement therapy. You were hopeful to finally regain your energy and your drive. The medication was supposed to help you with the brain fog, body aches, neck pain or migraines. Unfortunatley, these and other symptoms were with you more often that you cared to admit over the last few years. What else could there be? Your doctor said you lab tests were now in the normal range on your medication, but you still feel lackluster. You are slowly gaining weight despite exercising and dieting. The pain in your neck and headaches are becoming commonplace. In fact you are so frustrated that you are now looking outside of tradition medical care. You decided to try taking supplements you've read about on the internet, hoping nutritional deficiency was the missing link to getting back to feeling like how you did, what seems like a long, long time ago. Despite your best efforts, you feel like you have to resign yourself to a sentence of being overweight, feeling exhausted, neck hurting all the time, frequent headaches and brain fog. More often than you care to admit, finding the words you know are on the tip of your tongue, isn't easy any more. Thankfully, there is a large body of knowledge outside the standard medical model of hormone replacement for low thyroid symptoms. In fact a variety of factors can affect thyroid function. One example is the flame retardant used in pajamas, mattresses and other furniture called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). This chemical can lower your blood levels of thyroid hormone thyroxin. [1] PBDEs, not only lower levels of thyroxin, but also cause changes in the structure and function of the thyroid gland over time. Your thyroid's inability to function properly often manifests similarly in most cases. Symptoms may include lethargy and depression, fatigue, overall body aches, joint and neck pain, headaches and migraines, weight gain, and a host of other musculoskeletal complaints, including carpal tunnel syndrome pain.[2]

If you decide you need my help with your recurrent neuro-musculoskeletal health challenges, we'll begin with a consultation, complete a case review questionnaire, and conduct a dietary and nutritional evaluation. Meanwhile, I'll review your submitted medical records and determine if you've had all the appropriate tests. Last, we'll proceed to your written recommended action plan. Bear in mind, I do not diagnose or treat medical conditions other than neuro-musculoskeletal disorders. If you come to me with thyroid issues, this presupposes your doctor has already diagnosed you. I address stubborn and persistent neuro-musculoskeletal symptoms that have not responded to your main course of medical treatment, and I attempt to promote overall long term health and equilibrium. In other words I treat the patient, not the diagnosis, or label you have been given. Hi, my name is Dr. Karl Robert Johnson, PSc.D and I am a board certified in integrative medicine and practice licensed my the Pastoral Medicine Association, providing services to members only. My office is located in Shelby Township, Michigan. I am the author of The Ultimate Strategy For Ending Your Chronic Condition series of eBooks and videos on chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, balance disorders, migraines, thyroid disorders and others. I also recently published my first book entitled: Reclaim Your Life; Your Guide To Revealing Your Body's Life Changing Secrets For Renewed Health. Although I work with patients who have medical disorder, typically these patients are already medically diagnosed with medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, who are considered to be successfully medically managed by their physician, but who still have stubborn symptoms for which there appears to be no medical answer. Additionally, I do not diagnose or treat medical conditions as would a medical doctor with drugs or surgery. Instead, I work with patients to help their body restore improved function via nutrition and diet. Give us a call today or stop by Johnson Health & Wellness Center for more information. I'd be happy to meet with you to discuss your health concerns. Be encouraged and know you have many natural, noninvasive options for addressing your stubborn thyroid symptoms, despite being properly medically managaged.

Did you know that as we grow older, it's completely normal to experience gradual loss of both muscle (a process known as sarcopenia 💪) and bone mass (called osteopenia 🦴)? While these changes are a natural part of aging, they're not a life sentence—there’s a lot you can do to keep your body resilient, strong, and active! 🌟

Here are some practical ways to help preserve and even build muscle:
• **Resistance training:** Regular strength exercises—whether it’s using weights, resistance bands, or your own body weight—can stimulate both muscle and bone growth. Think of your muscles and bones like a custom car: without routine maintenance and a little challenge, performance drops. Give them regular “tune-ups” by staying active! 🏋️‍♂️🚗
• **Prioritize protein:** Your body needs enough protein to rebuild and maintain muscle tissue. Include sources like eggs, fish, poultry, beans, or plant-based proteins in your meals. 🍳🥗
• **Rest and recovery:** Growth doesn’t happen during the workout—it happens after. Allow your muscles time to rest, repair, and come back stronger. 😴🔄

Aging may be inevitable, but losing your strength isn’t. Every small step you take today strengthens your foundation for tomorrow—helping you move, live, and feel your best at every age. 🌱✨

Osteoporosis is often called the "silent thief" 🦴 because it can progress painlessly and unnoticed—until a sudden fracture signals its presence. Many people are unaware they have weak bones until a simple slip or everyday movement leads to a break 💥. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for a DEXA scan to track your bone health. Urine and serum bone resorption markers offer a proactive, noninvasive way to monitor the effectiveness of your osteoporosis treatment between scans, helping you and your care team make timely, informed adjustments to keep your bones as strong as possible 💪. https://hubs.ly/Q03M4mLp0

Today’s hyper-connected world makes it easy for older teens to spend hours sitting—streaming shows, gaming, scrolling social feeds, or tackling homework online. 📱🎮📚 But the numbers reveal a real concern: a systematic review of 25 studies found that teens who regularly spend lots of time in sedentary activities face up to a 69% increased risk of developing depression. 😞

Just like a car that idles too long can begin to sputter, our bodies and minds need movement to stay in optimal condition. 🚗💭 The link between prolonged sitting and mental wellness is a call to action: add regular activity, take movement breaks, and build positive routines. For families and educators, encouraging walking, biking, dancing, outdoor games, or hobbies can boost both physical and emotional well-being—helping teens build lasting resilience and happiness as they navigate these formative years. 🏃‍♂️🚴‍♀️💃🌳

A groundbreaking study featured in the Annals of Neurology (PMID: 39927551) sheds light on the crucial role of active Vitamin B12, known as holotranscobalamin, in maintaining brain health 🧠. The research highlights a significant connection between low levels of this active form of B12 and diminished white matter integrity, which is essential for efficient brain communication, as well as a decline in cognitive performance 📉. Interestingly, the study also points out that simply measuring total B12 levels might not provide an accurate picture of brain health. Think of it like checking the fuel gauge in your car; just because the tank is full doesn't mean the engine is running smoothly 🚗. This insight emphasizes the importance of focusing on the right indicators for optimal brain function.

In a fascinating study from France, researchers have uncovered a significant trend: depressive symptoms tend to increase steadily over the 15 years leading up to a dementia diagnosis. 📈 Interestingly, the most pronounced rise in these symptoms is seen in cases of non-Alzheimer's dementia. 🧠 Imagine it as a slow-building storm, where the clouds of depression gather long before the full impact of dementia is felt. 🌧️ This insight, published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, highlights the importance of early mental health interventions. 🩺 Understanding these patterns could be key to developing strategies that improve quality of life for those at risk. 💡 &Nutrition
