Chiropractic & Nutrition Wellness Center

Chiropractic & Nutrition Wellness Center We recognize health is an inherent state of well-being in mind, body, and spirit. Our role is to remo join me on your journey to healing. In 1983, Dr. Karl R.O.S.

I offer a caring and compassionate, yet no-nonsense approach to core level healing of the underlying malfunctions that lead to poor health. Johnson, a chiropractor and clinical nutritionist in Shelby Township, MI, followed his heart into the health field. Now hundreds of chronic condition patients in southeastern, Michigan have the relief and quality of life that most chronically ill patients hope and wish for, but seldom get. Unlike some who just ‘wander’ into the health profession and make a place for themselves, Dr. Johnson recalls how he was ‘drawn’ into the health field, it was his calling, his destiny. Before starting down his formal education path, Dr. Johnson had met many people and formed great relationships with individuals who he felt had the answers to his questions. Questions about health and healing, and why did the current “health care” system ignore the foundations of health. Time has really flown since Dr. Johnson graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1983. He has met many wonderful people and has been blessed with a busy practice and a wonderful team of assistants. Now more than ever he finds it exciting to be a doctor of chiropractic and a clinical nutritionist. For years there has been a resistance to natural healing methods by others who were not yet enlightened by its benefits. Acceptance of methods complimentary to traditional medical care is at an all time high and as a result more and more people are seeking alternatives to drugs and surgery. His passion for helping people and learning about the principles that underlie the foundations for health is at an all time high. Patients with chronic conditions (fibromyalgia, vertigo and other balance disorders, peripheral neuropathy, migraines, hypothyroidism, severe back, leg, neck and arm pain, ADD, ADHD, Autism, autoimmune disorders, etc.) from all over southeast Michigan flock to the Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition because of Dr. Johnson’s whole-person, patient-centered, functional neurological, structural and metabolic approach. Most patients know intuitively that there must be more to helping their chronic condition besides simply trying to patch it up with drugs, and with Dr. Johnson they get that complete functional approach that creates the vitality and quality of life they deserve. Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. and was voted to serve as the Vice President of the Pi Tau Delta Delta (an international chiropractic honorary society, open to the top 15 percent of the graduating class who have maintained a 3.50 cumulative GPA, have never withdrawn from a class or have never received less than a grade 3 for any quality grade while at Palmer. Invitations to Pi Tau Delta are issued during the final academic term.) At Palmer College of Chiropractic I began my intense study of neurology that I knew would allow me to serve my patients at a high level. Chiropractic Neurology is the newest, state of the art diagnostic and treatment technique. It brings together research findings from the fields of psychology, neuropsychiatry, neurology, neurophysiology, and nutrition — and used this knowledge to bring hope to the sick, unhappy, and hurting of all ages. Dr. Johnson states, "As a chiropractic physician, I strive to provide the finest care possible and provide an optimum environment for healing. Using the latest diagnostic tests to find the cause of your pain, suffering or ill health, it is possible to design a plan of care to get you back to your favorite activities fast. In my practice, you’ll discover a complete array of services for your entire family. Through a great number of continuing education courses, I have been very careful to master the newest and most effective techniques in chiropractic rehabilitative and wellness services as well as nutritional therapy. The procedures used in my practice are well suited for all ages from infancy to the elderly. Chiropractic is a quickly advancing field and I believe it takes dedication, diligence and just plain hard work to keep up. But I feel I must for the good of my patients." My personal free time is spent training for distance charitable cycling events (such as the MS Bike), a pursuit I picked up after one of my patients encouraged me to participate in my first 200 mile bike ride over 18 years ago. I have completed 17 such rides on the western side of Michigan and even participated in a team triathalon where my team came in first place for the age group. I am the proud parent of 3 young adults, and am happily married to my wife Sandra. I also love to learn and study about health, the human body, success principles, and science. I enjoy gardening, healthy eating, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, photography and sight seeing.

Could something as simple as a daily glass of orange juice support your heart? 🍊❤️

In a recent study published in *Molecular Nutrition & Food Research* (October 2025), researchers found that drinking two cups of 100% orange juice per day activated genes involved in regulating inflammation, blood pressure, and how your body processes fats. 🧬 Those three factors—inflammation, blood pressure, and fat metabolism—are major players in long-term heart health. 💓

Think of it this way: when these genes are “switched on” and working properly, it’s like giving your cardiovascular system a more supportive operating system in the background. 💻❤️ While this doesn’t mean orange juice is a magic bullet (and it’s still important to be mindful of sugar intake, especially if you’re dealing with insulin resistance or metabolic challenges), it does suggest that, in the context of a real-food, nutrient-dense diet, 100% orange juice may offer more than just vitamin C. 🥗🍊

If you’re working on heart health, blood pressure, or chronic inflammation, this kind of research is a great reminder that small daily nutrition choices can add up over time. ⏱️➡️💪

Post-Travel Recovery ✈️🌍

Long flights, road trips, and long hours in unfamiliar seats don’t just make you tired – they can leave your spine stiff, compressed, and out of alignment. It’s no surprise many people notice more neck pain, low back pain, or headaches after they get home from traveling. 😣

A post-travel chiropractic check can:
- Gently restore normal motion in your joints 🦴
- Reduce muscle tension and stiffness 💆‍♀️
- Help calm irritated nerves that may trigger pain or headaches 🌟
- Support better sleep so you can truly “reset” 😴

Think of it like unpacking and resetting your body’s alignment after your suitcase and schedule have been pushed to the limit. 🧳 Your body worked hard getting you there and back—give it the same care you give your itinerary. 💙

If you’ve just returned from a trip and you’re feeling “off,” this is a great time to schedule an adjustment and help your body get back to its healthy routine faster. 📅✨

Natural Daylight May Aid in Type 2 Diabetes Management ☀️💡

Spending your workday near a window might do more than just boost your mood. New research suggests that office workers with type 2 diabetes who are regularly exposed to natural daylight tend to have:

- Healthier, more stable blood glucose levels 💉✨
- Improved fat metabolism (how the body uses and stores fat) 🧬🔥
- Better-regulated circadian rhythms, which influence sleep, hormones, and energy 🌙🔁

In contrast, those who spend most of their time under artificial lighting don’t see the same benefits. 💡🚫

Think of natural light as a daily “reset” button for your body clock. 🔄☀️ When your circadian rhythm is in sync, it can positively affect everything from how you process blood sugar to how refreshed you feel in the morning.

If you live with type 2 diabetes, simple changes—like sitting closer to a window, taking short daylight breaks outside, or opening blinds during the day—may be a helpful complement to your medical care and nutrition plan. 🌤️🚶‍♂️🥗

What Is Mind Blanking? 🤔

Mind blanking is that sudden, frustrating moment when your mind feels like a clean slate. You’re in a meeting, class, or conversation, someone asks you a simple question you *do* know the answer to—and suddenly…nothing. No words, no ideas, just mental “static.” 😶‍🌫️

A recent study suggests mind blanking isn’t the same as being deeply focused or distracted and mind-wandering. Instead, it appears to be a unique brain state with its own pattern of activity. 🧠 During mind blanking, parts of the brain that normally help you stay aware and process information from your senses seem to “dim,” almost like very brief, sleep-like dips in key awareness regions—even though you’re technically awake.

This research points to factors like fatigue, poor sleep, or circadian rhythm disruption (your internal body clock being out of sync) as possible contributors. 😴 Think of it like your brain hitting a quick “brownout” when it’s overworked or out of rhythm. However, scientists caution that we’re still in the early stages of understanding this phenomenon, and more studies are needed before drawing firm conclusions about why mind blanking happens and how to prevent it. 🔍

Self-Efficacy Predicts Long-Term Outcomes in Chronic Low Back Pain 💡

New research suggests that greater confidence in one’s ability to manage pain and maintain daily function—often called self-efficacy—is strongly linked to better treatment outcomes. 🙌 In a study of 1,700 patients with chronic low back pain followed over two years, those who believed they could actively influence their pain and stay engaged in life tended to do better in the long term. 💪

In practical terms, this means your mindset and your tools for self-care truly matter. 🧠💚 Education, movement, and simple daily strategies—like targeted exercises, posture and ergonomics changes, pacing activities, and knowing how to respond to flare-ups—can all help shift you from feeling helpless to feeling in control. ✅

These findings reinforce what many of us in chiropractic and functional care have seen for years: when patients are informed, involved, and supported, outcomes improve. 📈 That’s why approaches emphasizing patient education, active participation, and self-management are so central to modern musculoskeletal care—and are a core part of how we help our patients. 🤝

In our office, we utilize the highly acclaimed BackPower Program developed by Dr. David Imrie, MD, and Dr. Lou Barbuto, DC to empower our patients to be the best they can be. 🌟 This structured, step-by-step system is designed to build both physical capacity and confidence, so patients don’t just feel better in the short term—they gain the skills and understanding to protect their backs and support their health for the long haul. 🏃‍♂️🧘‍♀️

aPrizes Re-Enforce Smoking Cessation Efforts 🎯🚭

Quitting smoking is one of the most important health decisions you can make—but it’s also one of the hardest. 💪 Ni****ne changes brain chemistry, daily routines become tied to smoking, and stress or social situations can easily trigger relapse. 😣

That’s why incentive-based programs are getting so much attention. 🎁✨

In a recent study published in *BMC Public Health* (December 2025), researchers followed smokers who went through a smoking cessation program. Those who were offered the chance to win a weekly prize for staying smoke-free were **almost twice as likely** to be smoke-free one year later:
- **43%** of participants in the prize group were still not smoking 🎉
- Compared to just **24%** in the group without prizes 😕

Think of it like adding an extra “nudge” for your brain: you’re not only working toward better health, clearer breathing, and more energy—you’re also getting a small, immediate reward to keep you motivated week after week. 🌬️❤️🏃

The takeaway:
Layering positive incentives—like prizes, rewards, or even personal milestones—on top of a structured cessation program can significantly strengthen your chances of long-term success. ✅🚭

Negative Life Events and Depression 😔

Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey Wave 5, researchers found that just **one** significant negative life event in the previous year—such as a new or worsening chronic illness (for yourself or a family member), a natural disaster or serious accident, or the death of a loved one—can increase a person’s risk of depression by **22%**. When someone goes through **two** such negative events in a year, that risk jumps to **55%**. 📊

PLoS One, January 2026

P.S. We see this all the time in our office. When life “piles on,” it doesn’t just affect your mood—it can show up as brain fog, chronic pain, headaches, poor sleep, and a body that just can’t seem to bounce back. 😴🧠 If you’re noticing that stress and loss have taken a toll on both your mind and your body, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to just “push through it.” 💛

Thoracic interventions may help reduce fear of movement in people with low back pain. 🧠💪

Kinesiophobia is more than just being “afraid to move.” It’s an excessive, often overwhelming fear of physical activity because you feel vulnerable to pain or reinjury. Over time, this can quietly shape your habits—you move less, guard your body more, and unintentionally slow down your own recovery. 🚶‍♀️➡️🛑

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials found something encouraging: for low back pain patients with higher levels of kinesiophobia, adding thoracic-focused interventions—like specific breathing drills and chest mobility exercises—into a broader, multimodal care plan significantly reduced fear of movement and was linked to better overall outcomes. 🌬️🫁 In other words, when the mid-back and ribcage are addressed (not just the low back), patients often feel safer moving again, and function can improve. ✅

Disability and Rehabilitation, October 2025 📚

P.S. I recently had two patients in this exact situation—both were stuck in a cycle of pain and fear of movement. Once we layered in targeted breathing and thoracic mobility work alongside their other treatments, they began moving with more confidence and started noticing meaningful changes in their daily life. 🌟🚶‍♂️

How Fitness May Protect Mental Health 🌿🧠

We often think of exercise as something we do for our heart, lungs, or waistline—but it’s just as powerful for your mind. 💓🏃‍♂️

A recent study of more than 5,000 adolescents and young adults found that those with higher cardiorespiratory fitness (think activities like brisk walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming) had better emotion regulation and overall emotional health. 🚴‍♀️🏊‍♂️ In simple terms, they were better able to handle stress, bounce back from challenges, and manage difficult feelings. 💪🧘

This may help explain why regular physical activity is consistently linked to lower rates of anxiety and depression. Movement acts like a “reset button” for the brain—supporting healthier brain chemistry, improving sleep, and giving your nervous system a chance to recalibrate. 🔁🧠😴 Even small, consistent steps (like a 20–30 minute walk most days of the week) can add up over time. 🚶‍♀️⏱️

If you’re struggling with mood, motivation, or chronic health challenges, incorporating gentle, regular movement—at a pace that’s safe for your body—can be an important part of a comprehensive, natural care plan. 🌱💫

Get Road Trip Ready 🚗✨

Planning a getaway? Before you hit the highway, set yourself (and your body) up for success with simple, healthy road trip habits:

- Pack nourishing snacks so you’re not relying on gas station food (think nuts, fruit, jerky, cut-up veggies). 🥜🍎🥕
- Stay hydrated—bring a refillable water bottle and sip regularly to keep energy and focus up. 💧🧠
- Schedule stretch breaks every 60–90 minutes to ease tight hips, low back, and neck tension. 🤸‍♀️🚏
- Support your spine: adjust your seat, use a small rolled towel behind your low back, and keep your head over your shoulders—not jutting toward the windshield. 🪑🦴
- Wind down well when you arrive: a short walk, light stretching, and deep breathing can help your nervous system reset after hours in the car. 🚶‍♂️🌅

Many patients also find that scheduling a chiropractic visit before traveling helps improve mobility and reduce travel-related discomfort. If you return from a trip feeling stiff or out of alignment, chiropractic care can help you get back to feeling your best. 🙌

If you have upcoming travel plans, we’re happy to help you prepare—and recover—so you can enjoy every mile of your journey. 🗺️

Healthy travel doesn’t have to be complicated—small choices along the way can mean less pain, more energy, and a trip you actually enjoy. 🌟
