Big changes on the block — 115 NoLa just got a brand new roof, and she’s lookin’ sharp as ever!

Whether it’s Shelby sunshine or those surprise Spring Carolina storms, we’re more ready than ever. This fresh new top isn’t just for looks — we swapped out the old black for a clean, crisp white, and she’s already turning heads. Why white? Because down here in the South, we know those hot months don’t play — and this reflective roof helps keep things cool, comfortable, and energy efficient.

It’s a little science, a little style, and a whole lot of Southern smarts.

So the next time you’re strolling by, look up and give our new crown a nod. 115 NoLa is shining bright — and staying cool while doing it.

Did you know? The upstairs of 115 Nola (currently Balanced Bodyworks) has a little movie magic in its walls!
This very space was used in the filming of The Hunger Games—specifically the emotional scene where Katniss says goodbye to her family before heading to the Capitol.

Every time we walk those stairs, we can’t help but feel a little cinematic history in the air. May the odds be ever in your favor!

Another space that time stood still at 115 NoLa.
The Cantrell Melton barbershop moved to a street level space in the early 2000s, so for roughly 20 years this space has only been used for storage.
In terms of usage, it could be grandfathered in as a barbershop, but obviously with occupying the street-level space we do not want to do that.
what do you think it should be used for?

During some demo in the old barbershop at 115 NoLa, we made a surprising discovery – walnuts-stored away by some little squirrel potentially a century ago!
For as long as we can remember, there have not been walnut trees in .
But here’s the proof that they once did exist. 🥜🐿️

📚How about a little history lesson for your Saturday morning? 📚

115 N. Lafayette st. Is one of the oldest buildings in the Uptown Shelby business district. Erected in 1900 (they’re inconsistencies around this date, but the courthouse has it listed as built in 1900, so we’re going with that)
by businesswoman Belle Fromm & Shelby Tycoon, W.C. Whisnant, it started out as a high-end clothing store. By 1927 this building began its long run of grocery store ownership beginning with the McKinney Market. In 1937 it changed to the City Grocery & Magness Meat Market which lasted for another nine years before becoming the Hunter Grocery Store in 1946. Over the century, the street level portion was host to a variety of occupants including a fine antiques dealer named Earl Meacham in 1969, a bible and bookstore in 1982, Bohemian Cycles owned by Scott Mull in the late 90s- early 2000s, & later a Zumba fitness gym. In 2019 Halcyon Salon & Emporium moved into the building where it has remained the occupant ever since.

While a number of businesses occupied the street level of the building, just as many occupied the upper floor. Perhaps the most notable was O.M. Mull who served five terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives, becoming speaker in 1941. In the most recent years, it was home to Logos To Go and most recently Sparkles Cleaning Service.

The basement was home to the barbershop that was thought to have been opened in the early 1920s, with the Cantrell Melton Barbershop being the most recent establishment which still operates on Washington St. in Uptown Shelby.

We can’t wait to see what the future will hold for this beautiful cornerstone of Uptown Shelby!
