📚How about a little history lesson for your Saturday morning? 📚
115 N. Lafayette st. Is one of the oldest buildings in the Uptown Shelby business district. Erected in 1900 (they’re inconsistencies around this date, but the courthouse has it listed as built in 1900, so we’re going with that)
by businesswoman Belle Fromm & Shelby Tycoon, W.C. Whisnant, it started out as a high-end clothing store. By 1927 this building began its long run of grocery store ownership beginning with the McKinney Market. In 1937 it changed to the City Grocery & Magness Meat Market which lasted for another nine years before becoming the Hunter Grocery Store in 1946. Over the century, the street level portion was host to a variety of occupants including a fine antiques dealer named Earl Meacham in 1969, a bible and bookstore in 1982, Bohemian Cycles owned by Scott Mull in the late 90s- early 2000s, & later a Zumba fitness gym. In 2019 Halcyon Salon & Emporium moved into the building where it has remained the occupant ever since.
While a number of businesses occupied the street level of the building, just as many occupied the upper floor. Perhaps the most notable was O.M. Mull who served five terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives, becoming speaker in 1941. In the most recent years, it was home to Logos To Go and most recently Sparkles Cleaning Service.
The basement was home to the barbershop that was thought to have been opened in the early 1920s, with the Cantrell Melton Barbershop being the most recent establishment which still operates on Washington St. in Uptown Shelby.
We can’t wait to see what the future will hold for this beautiful cornerstone of Uptown Shelby!
