Bluegrass horseshoeing farriers were up to some pretty cool things over the weekend!

It was a great honor for Pat to present with Hank Chisholm and Austin Edens at Well-Shod as a part of the Texas Professional Farriers Association TPFA clinic. Pat got to take away a lot of valuable knowledge from Hank, Austin and all of the great members of the TPFA- they’re a great group of farriers! Thank you John Harshbarger for hosting the clinic.

While Pat was in Texas over the weekend, some of the bluegrass team spent time learning first hand from Mike Wildenstein.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all who came out to the Certified Race Platers workshop on Saturday. It was a great display of unity within our industry and an impressive show of farriers willing to step up and put their work on the ground. I really appreciate Tim Byrne's help organizing the day!

First off, thank you to Kim Smith and her team at Second Stride who opened their doors to us and provided us lecture space and thoroughbreds to work on. Thank you to AFA Examiner Daniel Jones who drove through the night to get there and volunteer his time teaching, and to the testers that came to learn and prepare to administer a fair test based on what race platers do on a daily basis. We were also fortunate to have Mitch Taylor from the Kentucky Horseshoeing School perform a leg dissection to prepare us for the written portion of the exam. Mitch is known around the world for his education dissections and has offered the Kentucky Horseshoeing School to help in any way needed to help prepare people for their tests.

Thank you to Victory, St. Croix and Kerckhaert for their donations. We use their products on a daily basis and are thankful for their support. And Mark Hickcox from Victory brought his tools, joined us and passed his practice test!

We were also joined by representatives from HISA, Australian racing, and Kentucky racing.

This was an amazing display of solidarity in a field that can often be competitive, but by coming together I believe we are taking the steps to shape our industry from within and moving forward to get a seat at the table in the discussions taking place in our industry.

Looking forward to the testing in July!

The Kentucky Derby is the greatest two minutes in sports and it’s especially fun for our team this year! Dakota Baze had the opportunity to shoe Burnham Square while Pat Broadus and Adam Burnett shod Flying Mohawk. Here’s to a safe and successful race, our amazing team and the great sport of horse racing!🏇🍾👏🏻”

May 17 is shaping up to be pretty amazing. At the moment we have 21 confirmed candidates and that doesn’t include the testers, examiners and people that are just excited to check out the test that will be attending. It will be a great turnout!

For those that are planning on doing the certification on July 19 this is a great time to get familiar this the facilities at Second Stride.

If you haven’t already confirmed with me or Tim Byrne Jr. please reach out. Send a PM, text, phone call, etc. It would be nice to figure out what to be prepared for. Lol! That being said all are welcome.

If you are interested in talking the AFA race plater test on July 19th I would strongly suggest you sign up fairly soon. I think this one will fill up fast. We will have all Thoroughbreds to work on at this test. You can call the AFA office or register on their website at

My trip to Cuba was one of the most inspiring, energizing, and unbelievable experiences I’ve ever had.

While working alongside Cuba’s Horses, a non-profit organization set up to help Cubans with their horses through farrier, nutrition, harness making and veterinary care; we were surrounded by the most amazing group of people – they were eager to learn and thirsty for knowledge. I was motivated by the resourcefulness, passion and work ethic that came from every person we worked with at the clinic.

Most days the guys beat me to the workshop ready to get going. Not only were they showing up with a smile on their face but a real commitment to expanding their skills that was obvious; their dedication to being the best they possibly could was impossible to miss.

We worked with the resources we had, and it was amazing what was accomplished. We built a driving hammer on a small anvil supported by a stump on a curb, all by hand, without electricity, power tools or many of the conveniences that we are used to. This was a first for me! They showed me how to work with what you’ve got, and that talent isn’t limited by what’s available to you. Being a race-plater, this opportunity was extra special as it gave me the chance to do things that are outside of my day-to-day practice. We did hot shoeing, cold shoeing, modifications, and tool making.

Cuba’s Horses made this trip possible. I was invited to Cuba by this wonderful organization and Betsy Gossling to share my knowledge, but I ended up learning more along the way and left feeling inspired, motivated, and proud to be a part of something so special. I look forward to returning to this beautiful country. Thank you to everyone involved!
