My trip to Cuba was one of the most inspiring, energizing, and unbelievable experiences I’ve ever had.
While working alongside Cuba’s Horses, a non-profit organization set up to help Cubans with their horses through farrier, nutrition, harness making and veterinary care; we were surrounded by the most amazing group of people – they were eager to learn and thirsty for knowledge. I was motivated by the resourcefulness, passion and work ethic that came from every person we worked with at the clinic.
Most days the guys beat me to the workshop ready to get going. Not only were they showing up with a smile on their face but a real commitment to expanding their skills that was obvious; their dedication to being the best they possibly could was impossible to miss.
We worked with the resources we had, and it was amazing what was accomplished. We built a driving hammer on a small anvil supported by a stump on a curb, all by hand, without electricity, power tools or many of the conveniences that we are used to. This was a first for me! They showed me how to work with what you’ve got, and that talent isn’t limited by what’s available to you. Being a race-plater, this opportunity was extra special as it gave me the chance to do things that are outside of my day-to-day practice. We did hot shoeing, cold shoeing, modifications, and tool making.
Cuba’s Horses made this trip possible. I was invited to Cuba by this wonderful organization and Betsy Gossling to share my knowledge, but I ended up learning more along the way and left feeling inspired, motivated, and proud to be a part of something so special. I look forward to returning to this beautiful country. Thank you to everyone involved!
