Take The Stress Out Of Senior Parent Relationships.

As adults with a senior parent, we can live in a stressful environment with our folks or decide to make a change for the better. If your parent has a health condition, depression, or stubborn attitude that makes it difficult to take care of them, here's some ways to take down the stress level a few notches.

* Find Balance and Control
There may come a point where you need to start managing things for your aging parents. If your parents are unable to take care of themselves due to injury or health conditions, you will be the first in command to assist with their daily life.
Most people and especially seniors value their independence. As your adjusting, it's easy to "bother" your parent by trying to help them as much as you can, and sometimes not helping enough.
Find the balance they need in order to fully function, but not feel like they have lost complete control of their life.

* Home Care
Seniors view their home as their life. Abandoning it means abandoning their life, including the memory of their time with spouse and family.
Home care allows seniors to still have that independence they crave while getting the help they need. Caregivers are there to help with daily tasks, remind them to take medications, and create an environment for them in which they can thrive.
As an adult child, you get to go back to being the child. Enjoying time with them rather than struggling to balance your life, work, and family. You will also have time for yourself so you can provide better support when it is needed.

It's that time of year again. The cough and the runny noses are wreaking havoc once again. As a caretaker, you already know how to prevent your loved one from getting sick by you. Though your loved one can catch a common cold or the flu from other members of the family and friends. When seniors get the cold or flu, it can cause serious issues with some serious consequences. When we age, our immune system aren't as strong as they once were. Adults over the age of 65 have an increase risk of being hospitalized or even dying due to the flu.

There are several steps you can take to make sure your loved one don't get sick.

* Make sure they are getting enough sleep. Getting adequate rest can help strengthen the immune system.
* Wash your hands. You would be surprised how many surfaces a person's hands touch on a daily basis without even noticing.
* Avoid touch the face, as germs can spread easily this way. Hand washing throughout the day can keep many germs at bay.
* Get a flu shot. Encourage your loved one to also receive a flu shot.
* Be careful around kids or anyone that might be sick.
* Stay active and eating healthy foods during cold and flu season can help keep you healthy.

Sometimes, even when taking steps to prevent an illness, your loved one will still get sick. Keep petroleum jelly on hand if they get a chapped nose. Drinking plenty of liquids may also be the key to staying well.

If your loved one becomes ill and the symptoms worsen, suggest going to a medical professional. Cold and flu can often turn to pneumonia in older adults.

Signs to contact a medical professional are

* Shortness of breath
* Confusion
* Chest Pain
* Violent Vomiting

As a caretaker, the last things you want for your loved one is to fall ill. By taking these measures and precautions and keeping a watchful eye on them, you can ensure your loved one stays well and maybe doesn't get sick in the first place.
