The hot, dry conditions of the past two weeks have accelerated the bloom cycle of our daylilies and perennials. We will soon see the early autumn flowers bud. How rapidly the seasons pass.

The Star Magnolia is now in bloom here in our yard. This spectacular early blooming native of Japan is, in some years, the flowers are victimized by late spring freezing temperatures. Our Magnolia plantings are more than 20 years old and are small trees rather than flowering bushes. The snow-white blossom is, i think, striking and not usually susceptible to insect or weather damage. Unfortunately, they bloom only once per season and then remain a deciduous planting drawing little attention the remainder of the growing year.

It was a lovely time for my evening walk tonight. It was the time known by photographers as "sweet light". The beauty of this trek was accentuated by a pale but sweet fragrance I finally identified as Fragrant Autumn Climates. Though a bit invasive, no one can object to the perfumes of this pretty trailing vine. I finished my walk well before dark with gratitude for such a pleasant evening!

Ok, so what do you call this spring bloomer? PEONY or PAEONY? Actually, both names are correct. It mostly depends on where you call home.
Peonies are native to Asia, southern Europe, and western North America. In China, the name for Peony is “Sho Yu,” meaning “Most Beautiful.” Peonies can live past 100 years and come in every color except blue and can grow as large as 10-inches.
The best time to plant is October to March. If your plant does not bloom, it is either because the plant is too young (less than 3 years old) or because you planted it too deep. If the latter the plant will come up but does not bloom. If in doubt, replant the root 2 inches or less.

Rosie the cat is my best belly warmer on these chilly days. I only must sit for a moment in my favorite recliner and here she comes! She jumps to the arm of my chair. Then she snuggles in my lap. And there she will snooze as long as I will remain still!Who said a cat's life is hard?
