Surgery & post-op update:
I had my neck surgery this morning—went down around 9:30am and was brought back up around 1pm.
Everything went as planned, and so far recovery is already going a lot better than it did back in November 🙌
I don’t really have much pain right now, I’ve still got most of my voice (sorry Cody Allen Bouman lol), and I’ve been able to stay awake more—which feels like a huge win.
Procedure: they removed 2 of the 3 artificial discs from my previous surgery, took out the damaged C6 vertebra, relieved pressure on my spinal cord and nerves, and rebuilt/stabilized my neck from C5–C7 with a cage and plate.
This was a big surgery, so I know I’ve got a long road of recovery ahead, but I’m really thankful things are off to a smoother start.
Thank you to everyone who has checked in, sent prayers, and supported me through this—it truly means so much!! 💞

Update:
After some additional symptoms (from this fracture) over the weekend, I messaged my doctor on Monday and he immediately put me in a neck brace and got my surgeon involved again. Surgeon urged that I saw him this morning.
Well, unfortunately I am being admitted to the hospital today so that I am ready for surgery tomorrow sometime.

I will reach out to all of you that have scheduled appointments so that we can adjust!

I thank all of you for your patience through this journey! I plan to be back better than ever as soon as I can!

Figured I should probably give an update now that I’ve got more scan results:

Had a CT scan on my neck Thursday and a DEXA scan yesterday. My replacement disc surgery is mostly holding, but one area (C6) is having issues and one of the discs shifted a little. There’s also some nerve narrowing going on, which explains the little discomfort I’ve been having. It’s not anything like before surgery—I honestly just thought it was from getting back to normal life again.

CT scan did show that my C6 vertebra (the fractured one) lost about 4mm of height… as if I’m not short enough 🙄

Good news is my bone density is normal, so this isn’t a weak bone issue—just more of a mechanical/structure thing.

For now I’m back on restrictions (no lifting, taking it easy, etc.), and I’ve decided to brace my neck when I can just to be safe (my own decision). I have a follow-up with my doctor at the end of May.

I’m okay—just going to have to slow down a bit and be smarter about things for a while (whether I like it or not 😅).

Through all of this, I do want to say I thank God. I was originally supposed to have this follow-up back in February, but it got postponed. If it hadn’t, I would’ve been done and likely never known my neck was fractured. That’s honestly a scary thought thinking about where that could’ve led down the road. So again—I give that praise to God.

3 week post-op update:
It truly has looked worse than it feels! I'm SO thankful to have very minimal/ manageable pain!
Only pain that I've had to complain about is some bad muscle pain, as I'm sure it's from nerves being set free and now I also complain of being sore after sitting around for 2.5 weeks and then suddenly working (part-time) again.
My voice is still MIA. I constantly have to repeat myself (even more than usual 🙄😂). I do, however, sound better than I did right after surgery. I have to sip on drinks, otherwise I end up choking on whatever it is I'm drinking and spit it everywhere. I also occasionally send myself into a coughing fit due to crud getting stuck in my throat yet. This is all due to the surgeon going in the front and shoving everything over to get to my spine. They prefer to do surgery this way if the patient is OK with it being it is a much easier recovery because they aren't having to cut through any muscle.
Anyway, I'm doing pretty well considering how big of a surgery it was. I have been SO very grateful for those that have brought food, sent their thoughts/ prayers and have checked in! No small gesture has gone unnoticed!
Oh! I also forgot to add that this surgery has so far been worth it!! I don't have the grinding and pain in my neck anymore or any numbness/ tingling through my right arm that I was having! My range of motion is limited yet and I'm still under certain restrictions but I am so thankful to have doctors that listened and a surgeon that specializes in this!
