What an incredible CareNet gathering today!
We had over 45 healthcare professionals from across Eastern Idaho join us for lunch, connection, and meaningful conversation. The Gables was honored to sponsor this event and facilitate a discussion on:

“What is your go-to ritual when you need a boost in your mental health?”

The insights shared were powerful, honest, and uplifting. It’s always inspiring to pause and remember that even as caregivers, we need care too.

Dementia Support: working with personal care resistance

When someone living with dementia begins to resist personal care, it can feel upsetting, confusing, and even overwhelming for families.

But it’s important to know that care resistance is often not about being “difficult”, it can be a response to fear, discomfort, confusion, or a loss of control.

Personal care tasks like washing, dressing, or brushing teeth can feel unfamiliar or distressing, especially as dementia progresses.

Gentle support and the right approach can make a big difference.

Key tips that may help include:

- Mirroring: demonstrate the action yourself and invite them to copy.
- Prompts: Use clear cues and gentle physical guidance (such as placing a toothbrush in their hand).
- Breaking tasks down: avoid doing everything at once, spread care tasks throughout the day or week.
- Being flexible: don’t rush. Allow the person to lead wherever possible.
- Considering their perspective: be mindful of tone, pace, and approach.
- Giving them a role: encourage independence, ask permission, and explain each step calmly.

Supporting someone with dementia isn’t easy, but small changes in how care is offered can help preserve dignity, reduce distress, and build trust.
