JOHN BAINE
1949 - 2022
HONORS RESTORED AT LAST!!!
John R. Baine, 73, of Randle, WA, will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery (TNC) on November 12, 2022 at 11:30 a.m.
The Patriot Guard will es**rt from American Legion Post #94 in Lacey WA up to TNC where John will receive his long overdue honors.
John came into our care at Shelton Forest Funeral Home because our director, Teresa, is very familiar with veteran issues and helped navigate through the process.
John enlisted in the Army at the age of 17, and was sent to Vietnam. John was in constant danger and thrown from trucks, large ordinance exploded near him, and he also felt a sense of guilt for surviving.
John refused an order to make a run to a munitions dump because some of the marines who were shipping out told him that the "higher ups" would try and send him there and if he obeyed that order, he would come home in a body bag. Again, John refused the order, but 11 soldiers followed the order and came home in body bags.
John's commanding officer (CO) made his time in Vietnam even more hellish. John, who had a 6th grade education, resigned his commission, not knowing that he would get a discharge other than honorable.
John has been trying to restore his honor since 1971.
Due to the extraordinary, years long efforts of Veterans Services Officers (VSOs), John's benefits were restored on September 9, 2022.
On September 9, 2022, John was airlifted to Swedish Hospital and placed in the ICU; he never regained consciousness and did not know his benefits were restored.
John, we honor you and your service. You have shown to us all your heroics, our Veterans Service Officers heroics and help give us all the courage to continue to fight for our Veterans.
