πŸŽƒπŸ‘» One Week Until Halloween! πŸ‘»πŸŽƒ
We know many fun events are kicking off this weekend β€” and for some families, a little preparation can help make the celebration more enjoyable!

✨ Tips for a Sensory-Friendly Trick-or-Treating Experience ✨

Halloween is exciting β€” but it can also be overwhelming for children with sensory sensitivities. Here are a few ways to support a fun and successful night:

🧑 Practice Ahead
Do a quick walk-through at home, or use a social story to help explain what trick-or-treating will look like so your child knows what to expect.

πŸ“ Plan a Short + Familiar Route
Stick to an area your child knows well. Let them lead the pace β€” stopping whenever they need a break.

πŸŒ† Choose a Calm Time
Going out earlier in the evening can help avoid crowds, loud noises, and spooky surprises.

πŸ‘• Prioritize Comfort
Select costumes made from soft, breathable fabrics β€” or adapt a favorite everyday outfit into a costume to avoid sensory discomfort.

🎧 Pack Helpful Tools
Noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, or a small flashlight can help reduce sensory overload.

🧸 Bring a Comfort Item
A favorite toy, fidget, or blanket can provide reassurance and grounding while out and about.

With a little planning and flexibility, every child can participate in Halloween fun at their own pace! πŸ§‘πŸŽƒ

You must be a certain age to start using AAC.

πŸ—£οΈ False!
There’s no minimum age to start using AAC β€” communication can begin at any stage of development! πŸ’¬πŸ’™

Even infants and toddlers can benefit from AAC exposure. Introducing communication tools early helps children understand that their thoughts and voices matter β€” no matter how they express them.

AAC isn’t a β€œlast resort.” It’s a bridge to connection, language, and independence.

πŸŽƒπŸ’š Spot a Teal Pumpkin or Teal Trick-or-Treat Bucket this Halloween?

That teal color carries an important message β€” food allergy awareness!
Children with food allergies or special diets may be unable to enjoy traditional candy, but the teal bucket helps signal that they’re still here for the fun of trick-or-treating. 🍬✨

If you’d like to be allergy-friendly this Halloween:
πŸ’™ Offer non-food treats like stickers, glow sticks, bubbles, or small toys.
πŸ’™ Keep a separate bowl for allergen-free goodies.
πŸ’™ Spread kindness β€” every child deserves to join in safely!

Let’s help make Halloween safe, inclusive, and fun for all kids! πŸ‘»

πŸŽƒ What Does a Blue Trick-or-Treat Bucket Mean? πŸ’™

If you see a child carrying a blue pumpkin bucket this Halloween, it’s more than just a fun color β€” it carries an important message of autism awareness and inclusion.

🩡 Here’s what it means:

The blue bucket is often used by children on the autism spectrum to help signal that they may communicate, interact, or experience trick-or-treating a little differently.

Some children may be nonverbal or take a bit longer to respond to β€œtrick or treat.”

They might not wear a costume, or they may express excitement in ways that look a little different β€” and that’s okay!

πŸ‘» How you can help:

Be patient and kind.

Offer a smile or a simple β€œHappy Halloween!”

Remember, every child deserves to enjoy the fun of the season in their own way.

Let’s make Halloween a time where everyone feels welcome and included! πŸ’™πŸŽƒ

to our next AAC project.

MAY 2023: We are thrilled to share a project that SPGCT was able to work on with 2 Quinnipiac students this spring semester. Alexis and MacKenzie are Health Science Studies undergrads taking a Community Engagement Leadership class, where they had to create or develop a project within the community. Together with our team at SPGCT, these ladies spearheaded creating an ACC flyer for our pediatric offices that could not only be posted in the offices for use by families and children, but also offered a digital download for future use.
These ladies took their design and visited several pediatric offices in the in area where they were able to talk about their project but also what we offer at SPGCT.
We applaud these ladies for their dedication to the task and this project. We are looking forward to future project like with with QU and their students.

πŸ—£οΈ False!
Using AAC does not slow down or stop speech development β€” it actually supports it! πŸ’¬βœ¨

Research shows that children who use AAC often develop spoken language faster because they’re learning the power of communication. When children have a reliable way to express themselves, frustration decreases and meaningful interactions increase β€” building a stronger foundation for speech.

Every way a child communicates is valuable! πŸ’™

At SPGCT, we’re proud to be a multidisciplinary practice, meaning your child’s ABA, Speech, and Occupational Therapy can all happen under one roof 🏠✨
