Ah, the inner critic. We all have one. How it is shaped and informed is different for us all. When I work with inner critic, I really like to preface it with the idea that we can hear it, but we don’t have to live by it. We can greet inner critic at the door, but the visit can be temporary. Inner critic is a guest and doesn’t have to be a permanent resident taking up heart and mind space. Sometimes observing the thought, noticing where it stays with us, and choosing to release the thought (and repeating if necessary) takes a lot less energy than a) entertaining the inner critic for extended periods of time and b) trying to shush the inner critic repeatedly. Externalizing the inner critic, for example, through art or like this SoulCollage® card, can help you settle into a stance of curiosity rather than shame, fear, or doubt.
