Fairfield County Medical Association has named State Representative Sarah Keitt as our 2025 Legislator of the Year. Rep. Keitt, who represents Town of Fairfield, CT and Town of Trumbull, CT, brings over 20 years of public health advocacy experience. She currently serves as an Assistant Majority Leader in the State of Connecticut General Assembly. She is also Vice-Chair of the Commerce Committee and serves on the Committees on Children, Human Services, and Public Health.

A longtime champion of health equity, Rep. Keitt has dedicated her career to ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to quality care and that physicians’ voices are heard in shaping sound policy. Healthcare is truly in her family’s DNA: her late father was a general surgeon in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and her brother, John Knab, M.D., is an interventional pain management specialist in North Carolina.

Thank you to Representative Keitt for her leadership, her dedication to building healthier communities, and her strong advocacy for physicians and patients across the State of Connecticut. fcma.org

This October, the Fairfield County Medical Foundation will recognize outstanding medical students with the Lambros E. Siderides, MD Scholarship Awards at the Fairfield County Medical Association’s Annual Fall Physician Reception & Award Ceremony. Among this year’s honorees is Maira Silva, selected by the Dean of the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University.

Maira’s journey reflects a deep commitment to education, service, and advocacy. A Quinnipiac graduate in Behavioral Neuroscience with a minor in English, she has continued at Netter for her medical degree. Throughout her training, she has volunteered with In A Heartbeat Foundation, teaching 2-step CPR and performing EKGs in schools, while also serving with LEAP, Bobcat Community Health Alliance (BCHA), and other community health programs—often as a Spanish interpreter for under-served families.

Her scholarly focus on language-based health disparities, along with leadership roles on the boards of the The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and Student National Medical Association Inc (SNMA), highlight her passion for equity in healthcare.

Now in her fourth year, Maira is applying into Emergency Medicine, carrying forward Dr. Siderides’ legacy of compassion and service. We look forward to celebrating Maira and her fellow Siderides Scholars at The Patterson Club on October 9. FCMA.org/events

At the Fairfield County Medical Association’s Annual Fall Physician Reception & Award Ceremony on October 9, 2025, the Fairfield County Medical Foundation will present the Lambros E. Siderides, MD Scholarship Awards. Each recipient is selected by the Dean of their respective medical school, and this year we are honored to recognize Ethan Wang, chosen by John S. Francis, MD, PhD, Dean of the Yale School of Medicine.

Ethan’s path to medicine is inspiring. After earning his BS in Pharmacy Studies summa cm laude and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from UConn, he entered ’s MD program in 2022. His research on stroke-related seizures, guided by Dr. Nishant Mishra, has already led to a first-author paper under review and national recognition at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). Equally impressive is Ethan’s dedication to service through leadership on the Yale University Medical Student Council and hands-on care at the HAVEN Free Clinic in New Haven.

We look forward to celebrating Ethan and his fellow Siderides Scholars at The Patterson Club. Learn more: fcma.org/events

John Brannelly, Executive Director of the Fairfield County Medical Association (FCMA), joined Karen Gottlieb, RN, Executive Director of Americares Free Clinics (AFC), for a tour of AFC’s new facility.

FCMA was instrumental in the formation of AFC in 1994 under the leadership of the late Paul K. Maloney Jr., MD of Norwalk, then President of FCMA, who helped recruit the first physicians to volunteer their time to care for patients.

Today, AFC operates multiple locations across Fairfield County. While the clinics are supported by a professional staff, they continue to rely on local who generously volunteer their time and provide pro bono specialty referrals. Physicians interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact either John or Karen. fcma.org and americaresfreeclinics.org

The Fairfield County Medical Association is proud to announce that all six hospitals in Fairfield County have nominated a physician for the 2025 Dr. Melville G. Magida Award, to be presented at the FCMA's Annual Fall Physician Reception & Award Ceremony on October 9. Each nominee exemplifies clinical excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to the medical profession.

St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport CT Hartford HealthCare is honored to nominate Edward T. Carreras, MD, FACC, FSCAI, for the 2025 Dr. Melville G. Magida Award in recognition of his outstanding clinical skill, compassionate care, and leadership in cardiovascular medicine.

A proud member of the Fairfield County Medical Association, Dr. Carreras is affiliated with Cardiology Associates of Fairfield County and serves as Director of Structural Heart Disease at St. Vincent’s. He has transformed cardiac care in the region by expanding access to advanced interventional procedures, particularly for older adults and under-served communities. Whether it's performing lifesaving interventions at 3:00 a.m. or personally calling patients with their results, Dr. Carreras consistently goes above and beyond. His patients describe him not only as a gifted physician, but also as a source of comfort and strength—“an angel,” as one wrote, who brings calm and clarity during some of life’s most challenging moments.

Dr. Carreras is equally respected among his peers for his expertise, humility, and mentorship. As a colleague noted, he is the “doctor’s doctor,” the one others turn to for guidance in complex cases or when urgent decisions are needed. He played a critical leadership role during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to organize and staff the cardiology ICU with selfless dedication. His unflappable demeanor, deep knowledge, and commitment to teaching have made him a role model to younger physicians and a valued member of the medical community. Through his work at Cardiology Associates of Fairfield County, Hartford HealthCare, and FCMA, Dr. Carreras has advanced not only the quality of care but also the spirit of service that defines the Magida Award.
