The Fairfield County Medical Association is proud to announce that all six hospitals in Fairfield County have nominated a physician for the 2025 Dr. Melville G. Magida Award, to be presented at the FCMA's Annual Fall Physician Reception & Award Ceremony on October 9. Each nominee exemplifies clinical excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to the medical profession. Greenwich Hospital nominated James S. Farrelly, MD.

Dr. Farrelly displays extraordinary dedication to surgical care, trauma leadership, and patient-centered excellence. A valued member of the Fairfield County Medical Association and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Farrelly serves as Associate Medical Director of the Trauma Program at Greenwich Hospital, where he has helped care for more than 1,300 trauma patients in just the past few years. Calm, compassionate, and remarkably accessible, he has become an essential presence not only in the trauma bay but throughout the hospital, earning the trust and admiration of patients, colleagues, and staff. As Medical Director of the Surgery Physician Assistant Program and Chair of the Department of Surgery’s Quality Committee, Dr. Farrelly models the highest standards of professionalism, teamwork, and clinical excellence.

Since joining Greenwich Hospital in 2022, Dr. Farrelly has emerged as a respected educator and advocate for quality improvement, mentorship, and innovation in trauma care. He is a member of the hospital’s Emerging Leaders Program and plays a key role on the Professionalism Forum. His peers frequently praise his leadership during critical cases, tireless advocacy for surgical patients, and generous mentorship of young physicians, residents, and PA staff. With advanced training in surgical critical care and pediatric surgery, and an impressive portfolio of peer-reviewed research and innovation—including in utero gene therapy—Dr. Farrelly exemplifies a new generation of physician-leaders who combine academic rigor with humility, compassion, and deep service to their community. He honors the spirit of Dr. Magida by delivering not only expert care but true healing to the people of Fairfield County.

Norwalk Hospital nominated Christine Chin, MD.

Dr. Chin, a radiation oncologist at Norwalk Hospital, has made an extraordinary impact on patient care since joining the Whittingham Cancer Center in 2023. Within her first year, she led the development of a pioneering cervical brachytherapy program that prioritizes both clinical effectiveness and patient comfort—especially for under-served patients facing gynecologic cancers. Dr. Chin’s unique protocol ensures that patients remain fully anesthetized throughout the entire treatment process, reducing trauma and minimizing the risk of PTSD. Her model, completed within a streamlined three-hour window in the radiation suite, eliminates the need for painful transitions between multiple hospital departments and is already attracting referrals from across the region.

Dr. Chin's approach reflects a deep commitment to community health, clinical excellence, and human-centered innovation. Her leadership brought together a multidisciplinary team—including anesthesiology, nursing, medical physics, and hospital administration—to implement this groundbreaking care model. With a background that includes a biology degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a medical degree from Stony Brook University, and a residency at Columbia, she also brings academic rigor and national recognition to her work. Her peers describe her as visionary, persistent, and wholly dedicated to doing what is right for her patients. Dr. Chin exemplifies the spirit of the Dr. Melville G. Magida Award.
