Nurses Week may have come to a close, but our appreciation for our Millennium Physicians nurses is never-ending.
To close out our celebration, we’re honored to highlight one more story from a compassionate oncology nurse, Tayler McNamara, RN, whose dedication reminds us why nurses are the backbone of patient care.
✨What inspired you to become a nurse?
I was inspired to become an oncology nurse because I wanted to be a consistent source of support for patients during one of the hardest times in their lives. I’ve always had a passion for helping people, and oncology allows me to build deep, trusting relationships while providing both clinical care and emotional support. The strength of cancer patients inspires me every day and being able to walk alongside them in their journey is truly an honor.
✨What is the most rewarding part of being a nurse?
The most rewarding part of being an oncology nurse is seeing positive changes in patients’ health and knowing that my care made a meaningful difference during one of the most difficult times in their lives. One of the most powerful moments is seeing a patient reach remission and having the honor of standing beside them as they ring the bell - a symbol of hope, strength and a new beginning. Witnessing these milestones, no matter how hard the journey has been, brings an immense sense of purpose and reaffirms the importance of compassionate, dedicated care.

Happy Nurses Week! We're kicking off our celebration by spotlighting one of our incredible oncology nurses, Karen Lucas, RN, BSN — a former teacher whose passion for helping others led her to a second career in nursing. Her warmth, compassion, and unforgettable hugs have made a lasting impact on countless patients and families. Here’s what she shared with us:
✨ What inspired you to become a nurse?
This is my second career, my first being a teacher so I love to help people. I chose oncology because you have the opportunity to help people in a very vulnerable state of their life when they need love and support the most. Walking alongside them and their family knowing that your kindness and compassion can make their experience just a little bit better is what makes this job so rewarding.
✨ What’s the most rewarding part of being a nurse?
I think the most rewarding part of my job is that we get to know these patients very well because we see them so often. We are invested in them just as much as they are with us so we become like family. I've been told I give the best hugs, so hugging patients is the best part of my job for sure!!!
✨ Describe nursing in one word.
Compassionate
✨ What’s something about your job that would surprise people?
We laugh A LOT with our patients EVERY DAY in clinic. Most people don't realize that an infusion suite can be filled with so much joy.
✨ What’s something a patient or family has said that’s stuck with you?
Watching a grown man, through his tears, genuinely thank us for what we do for them really sticks with you at the end of the day.
✨ What’s one moment in your career that you’ll never forget?
The families who come back after their loved one has passed to give you a hug and say thank you. In that moment, you know you've made a difference.

In a heartfelt conversation on World Cancer Day, Cassidy, a devoted mother of four and a loving wife, opened up about her recent diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma just two weeks ago. Her journey began when she discovered a lump on her chest, prompting her to seek medical guidance. Facing an intensive treatment plan that includes 24 weeks of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, she remains determined to stay positive and transparent—not only for herself but especially for her children.
Her husband of 23 years has been her rock, offering unwavering support through every challenge, always reminding her that she is not facing this battle alone. To encourage her along the way, her best friend gifted her a daily journal, which she uses to fuel her optimistic mindset, capturing both the challenges and small victories along the way. Each day, she writes a Bible verse and words of affirmation, grounding herself in faith and resilience.
Although her first chemotherapy session was particularly difficult, the prayers and encouragement from the Millennium Physicians staff gave her strength. Her first visit to Visible Changes for a cancer wig was emotional and overwhelming, but with the support of her family, she overcame her fears and found joy in trying on different styles. Having been adopted, Cassidy emphasizes the importance of genetic testing, especially since her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 26. She also takes pride in owning a fire extinguisher business, a testament to her resilience and determination.
With the steadfast support of her husband and the unwavering love of her family and friends, Cassidy continues to draw strength from every shared moment. Her journey on World Cancer Day serves as a beacon of hope and a powerful reminder that love, faith, and unity can illuminate even the darkest times.
