Rev. F. Robert Ruyts, age 88, took his final journey to heaven on February 13, 2025, surrounded by his family, at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Bob was born on January 1, 1937, in Saginaw, Michigan to Frank Joseph and Catherine Adele (Voise) Ruyts. He was the oldest of four children and big brother to three sisters. He grew up in Saginaw, graduating from Saginaw High School in 1956. While in high school, he worked for Princing’s Drug Store, later starting at the B&O, C&O railroad, Saginaw yard, where he became a journeyman switchman. His first love was a new pink and white Crown Victoria convertible with bubble skirts and wide whitewall tires.

After high school, Bob enlisted in the United State Air Force, where he served as a Chaplain’s assistant until he was honorably discharged in 1959. He returned to the railroad until leaving for seminary in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, in 1966. Two daughters were born during his marriage to Janice Anne Smith of Homer, New York. He attended the University of Detroit, earning a Bachelor Degree in Social Work in 1972. Further educational pursuits led him to obtain a Master’s Degree in Theology from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois.

In 1970, after feeling the call to become a minister, he became pastor of the Church of the Brethren in Harper Woods, Michigan where he earned his ordination. His career as a pastor took him in a variety of directions in several denominations, including Church of the Brethren, American Baptist, and Church of God. He dedicated his life to God and to helping people, continuing to positively impact everyone he met until his final breath.

He married Janice K. (Cummings) Campbell on July 4, 1981 and added two sons to the family. They started a successful custodial service in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan and pastored churches concurrently for many years.
Bob is survived by his wife, Jani Ruyts, Mt. Bob had the joy of loving 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, a great-granddog Emma and a teddy bear named Tedward.

Howard Laverne Stanke 1949-2025

Howard Laverne Stanke passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025 at the age of 75 with loved ones by his side. Howard put up a courageous fight against Parkinson’s disease but eventually he could not fight any longer.

Howard is survived by his wife, Kathie, of 38 years and children, Amy (Ed) Courter, Brad (Margo) Stanke, Lisa (Patrick) Travis, James (Jacquelyn) Thering, brother Dave (Louanne) Stanke, sisters Judy Crosby, Karen (Tom) Warner, June (Wayne) Strauss, stepmother Ruth Stanke and 11 grandchildren. Howard is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceding Howard in death were his parents, Howard, Sr. and Betty Barrett, and his granddaughter Macey.

Some say a grandparent’s most important job is to spoil their grandchildren rotten, and Howard did exactly that! He would jokingly say ‘My house, my rules’ as he gave his grandkids a mini-Hershey bar right in front of their parents! There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his friends and family, but when it came to his grandchildren, he went above and beyond.

Howard was known for his ability to fix literally anything and everything! There was no motor vehicle that he couldn’t get back to running like new, no gas pump that he couldn’t get pumping gas again, no construction job that was too big or too complicated and no task in general that he was too afraid to tackle. But most of all, there was no lake that Howard would pass by if there was a smallmouth bass or a big crappie lurking in the water! Howard sure loved his fishing!!
Howard would always find time to help others but he seldom, if ever, asked for help with anything! If he had something to do or had something on his mind, he would often stay up until well after dark or wake up super early to get it done. He always had goals no matter how big or how small, and he obsessed about meeting his goal until that goal was complete.

Cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial service on Monday, January 27 at 1 P.M. at the New Life Church (7989 E Broomfield Rd., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858) with Pastor Greg Huffer and Sam and Steve Hoyle officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please find it in your heart to make a donation to Heartland Hospice or New Life Church in Mt. Pleasant.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Berry Funeral Home of Shepherd.
