September is . Do you know your cholesterol numbers?

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the “bad” cholesterol. Too much LDL in your blood can clog your arteries and cause atherosclerosis, leading to heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is considered the “good” cholesterol because it helps to prevent LDL cholesterol from sticking to artery walls and clogging them.

Welcome to Bassett, Valerie Yager, ANP-BC! We’re pleased to share that Valerie has joined Bassett Healthcare Network as a Nurse Practitioner with Family Medicine at Bassett Health Center Dolgeville.

Valerie earned her master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner from SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica-Rome in Utica, NY. She is board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Valerie provides comprehensive medical care to patients ages 18 and above, including preventative treatment, chronic disease and acute illness management, and care coordination.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, behind skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, with older men at greater risk.

Congratulations to Caroline Andrew, FNP, Family Nurse Practitioner at Bassett Healthcare Network’s Middleburgh School-Based Health Center, who has been recognized by her peers with Bassett’s prestigious 2025 Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) Award of Excellence.

Caroline has worked for Bassett since September 2023. One of her key accomplishments has been the creation of a student food pantry that all Middleburgh students in need can access. In her free time, she grows peonies on her family’s farm – and both new ventures are helping her truly get back to her roots.

Our online cancer support group meets monthly, providing anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis with a safe place where they can give and receive support.

Tick-borne diseases are a serious challenge in our area. Anaplasmosis cases are a particular concern for our patients this year, on top of other illnesses like Lyme disease.

We love our pets, but they can carry ticks into our homes after they spend time outside. Be sure to check them for ticks and speak with your veterinarian about prevention strategies to best protect them and yourself.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. It's a time when we recommit ourselves to the fight against alcohol and drug abuse. This crisis touches many of us and we can come together to support our neighbors who may be struggling with addiction.

Did you know naloxone nasal spray (also known as Narcan) is available at all of Bassett Healthcare Network's outpatient pharmacies in Cooperstown, Delhi, and Oneonta without a prescription? Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that temporarily reverses the effects of opioids. It is highly effective as an emergency treatment in cases of known or suspected opioid overdose.
