Dr. Vivien Theodore Thomas was a surgical technician who developed the life saving surgical technique for "blue baby syndrome." He was born in New Iberia, LA in 1910. He graduated from highschool with honors and went on to college to pursue medicine. However, the stock market crashed, resulting in him leaving school and becoming a lab assistant with Dr. Alfred Blalock at Vanderbilt University. After Dr. Blalock was offered a position at John Hopkins surgery department, he insisted Dr. Thomas join him. In 1944, Dr. Thomas coached Dr. Blalock through his first "blue baby syndrome" surgical procedure. Dr. Thomas went on to develop other surgical techniques and train many other surgeons at John Hopkins and remained on their medical staff for years. In 1976, he was presented with an honorary doctorate degree from John Hopkins University and named instructor of surgery by the School of Medicine.

Did you know that February is also American Heart Month? In honor of Black History Month and Heart Month we would like to bring awareness to continued health disparities in heart health and survival in the Black community. According to the American Heart Association(AHA), the greatest occurence of cardiac arrest in the community setting happens in Black Americans. However, Black Americans are less likely to survive the incident or receive Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) from bystanders per AHA. Taking a course and learning CPR is a great tool for everyone and has been shown to increase the chances of survival following cardiac arrest.

Happy Black History Month! LV Health & Wellness Pharmacy was founded by two Black Pharmacists from East St. Louis, IL. Today our vision and mission are still the same. There have been and continues to be many challenges, especially since there was and is no blueprint for us to follow, but our faith in God has kept us going. Independent pharmacies like ours are being squeezed and pushed out. As one of the very few black-owned pharmacies in the nation, we will do our best to continue this mission God gave us to help the community live better and healthier lives! Thank you to all who support us and everyone who works for and with LV Health & Wellness Pharmacy. This month we are challenging you to not only celebrate Black History Month, but make it, by supporting businesses like ours and helping the mission live, grow, and thrive. About Us

We are a "dynamic duo" husband and wife pharmacist team! We grew up in East St. Louis, IL and met in high school. Despite the many challenges that go along with living in an economically disadvantaged city, we both persevered and each went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree and a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. With combined experience of over 20 years in pharmacy, attending business and pharmacy ownership workshops, we gained the experience, knowledge, and skill that aided us in opening our own pharmacy. We are blessed to parent our twin boys and plan to keep it a family business for them and future generations. We are spiritual people and our faith in God propels us to levels beyond understanding!

We also work with other local entrepreneurs to sell their products in our store and help them increase their brand awareness. We want to build strong communities and start with our own through giving, partnering with organizations to assist with medication costs, giving presentations, participating in health fairs, immunization clinics, and many other local events. We know that you could have supported any other business, so we are always appreciative when you choose us!

Our pharmacy’s motto is, “Love Health, Change Communities.” At LV Health and Wellness pharmacy, we provide personalized care, educate you on your medications and work with you and your healthcare providers to optimize your treatment. Our pharmacy focuses on health and offers organic, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and non-GMO product selections. We have a variety of vitamins, supplements, and probiotics and are more than happy to talk with you about them. We are committed to serving the community with love and compassion.
