Friends of Fircrest was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1978. From the Articles of Incorporation:
The purposes for which this corporation is formed are the following:
1. To foster and take action to ensure new and/or better programs, treatment, and/or benefits, for a better and more efficient use of facilities and living conditions
for, and to generally promote the welfare of:
a. The mentally retarded in the community, in nursing homes, in group homes, intermediate care facilities, or other resident facilities in the community including but not limited to individuals on placement from Fircrest School; and
c. Mentally retarded individuals generally.
2. To foster cooperation between and to cooperate with, and to foster the transfer of and to transmit information to, from, and between:
a. The members of this corporation;
b. Any facility or organization involved in any way with the mentally retarded in the community or in any resident facility; and
c. Any governmental agency involved in any way in executing or carrying out existing or prospective programs and projects involving the mentally retarded.
3. To promote the general welfare concerning mentally retarded individuals wherever living. The purposes specified in these Articles of Incorporation, except where expressly limited, shall be in no way limited or restrained by inference from or interpretation with any other clause or part of these articles, but the purposes specified in these Articles shall be regarded as independent and separate purposes of this corporation. This corporation need not carry out or engage in the pursuit of all of the foregoing purposes but may at any time, engage in none, one, or more or all of the purposes, and may carry out or engage in any one or more purposes in varying degrees and extents. The corporation will not, as a substantial part of its activities, attempt to influence legislation (unless it first elects to come under any then existing federal provisions allowing lobbying expenditures) or participate to any extent in a political campaign for or against any candidate for public office.
