Latest book by Jonathan Haidt
This book, "the anxious Generation" focuses on the mental health crisis among Gen Z, which Haidt argues quite convincingly is tied to smart phones and social media. Gen Z (those born after 1996) were the first to enter puberty with smart phones. He calls it the Great Rewiring, the period from 2010-2015, where for the first time ever kids grew up with devices that gave them nearly constant access to screens and the internet.

In this period, which coincides precisely with the advent of the front facing camera (2010) and FB buying Instagram (2012) mental illness among teenagers began to spike. He wallops you with chart after chart of different statistics to drive this home. Of note:

▪️Depression among youth became 2 1/2 more times prevalent since 2010!
▪️37% of college students report feeling anxious “always” or “most of the time,” while an additional 31% felt this way “about half the time.” This means that only one-third of college students said they feel anxiety less than half the time or never!
▪️The rate of self-harm for young adolescent girls nearly tripled from 2010 to 2020. The rate for older girls (ages 15–19) doubled, while the rate for women over 24 actually went down during that time. In other words, Gen Z was uniquely affected.

Spiritual people talk of “non-attachment”.

But it’s brave to be attached.
It’s brave to let yourself care. Deeply.

Because you know that the one you love may die.
You know that death is infused into life, and that ultimately nothing is under our control.
You know that what you have you can lose, and our most secure plans crumble.

You know that each day may be your last.
Each day with a friend or loved one.
Each outing with your partner.
Each adventure with your child.
It may be your last.

It may all come to an end soon.
And without warning.
And you’ll be unprepared for the loss.

Still, you care.
You make plans.
You speak the word “tomorrow”.
And you dare to talk about “next year”.

You invest. You share your heart.
You listen.
You come to rely on others, and let them rely on you.
You are a person of your word.

You take the world seriously.
Yet you know it can all collapse in the blink of an eye.

Attached, yet non-attached,
you hold such paradox in your heart.

You understand the teachings of non-duality
yet you let yourself care about the world
to the point of tears.

You are utterly Whole.
