Hear from a parent about their NYFS “Y” and the experience and support that made a difference for their family:

“NYFS connected with my son’s school SAVHS and offered convenient on-site therapy. Even though it wasn’t doable for us, we found a regular reliable therapist here and felt comfortable. Staff have always been respectful, calm, and supporting me. Love the snacks and tea a lot too.”

This May, NYFS acknowledges both Mental Health Awareness Month and Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, recognizing that mental well-being is inseparable from the diverse identities and cultures that shape our community. By fostering inclusive mental health care, we move closer to a world where everyone has the support they need to thrive.

We’re opening this month’s conversation with a resource from NAMI Minnesota that highlights the importance of early recognition, education, and community support for mental health. True awareness starts with education, and we invite you to join us in building a more supportive, informed community.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and NAMI Minnesota would like to highlight the special work happening across the state to support people living with mental illnesses and their families. We want to place a special focus on serious mental illness and the importance of early recognition and support. One in five adults experiences a mental illness each year, and many of these conditions are severe. Recognizing early warning signs and connecting people to care sooner can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Recovery is possible, and education and community support play a key role.

As Sexual Assault Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re reminded that awareness, prevention, and support are ongoing efforts. We’re sharing this resource from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), which highlights key takeaways from newly released CDC data on sexual violence. The data help deepen understanding and inform ongoing efforts to address and prevent sexual violence across communities. This work matters far beyond one month.

Jennifer Grove, Susan Washinger January 22, 2026 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a new report, National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2023/2024 Sexual Violence Data Brief. This report highlights the most recent findings from the National Intimate...

Hear from Mounds View Police Chief Ben Zender, NYFS Board Member, on his NYFS “Y” and the importance of partnership, early intervention, and the lasting impact of Youth Pathways Diversion Program:

“Partnership is extremely important, especially when working with our PD liaison on early intervention strategies. Given the complexity of the criminal justice system, providing early intervention to these youth and connecting them to the resources they need can have a meaningful positive impact on their success. With over a 90% success rate through diversion compared to the traditional criminal justice system, this approach is critically important. When you impact one child, you also impact the family, the neighborhood, and the community.”
