Hello!

I wanted to reintroduce myself and give a little insight into me as a therapist, but also as a human who is both growing and imperfect.

Not only am I a working therapist, but I’m also a person who takes medication for an anxiety disorder. Goes to therapy. Grieves. Makes mistakes and apologizes.

Not only am I a working therapist, but I’m also a person who loves pop music, is a wife, daughter, and sister. Finds comfort and peace in nature and experiencing wildlife. Believes that all people should have their basic human rights honored.

I am so grateful to be able to do the work that I do, and also acknowledge the innate privilege I have been granted to have been able to get here.

I am a therapist and I am imperfect and growing, flawed and loved. I am so honored to have to opportunity to connect with people, learn from them, and even be a small part of their stories.

✨Just out here romanticizing my life✨

Always *trying* to practice what I preach in sessions— going on walks really DO improve your mood 🍁🍂🌾 especially in the beautiful WI fall weather.

Pause what you’re doing, count down from 5… and just go! Even if it’s around the block and back. 🤍 check in to see how you feel pre and post walk. Even if you feel 2% less sad, overwhelmed, anxious, irritable, etc., it was worth it.

Self-compassion is something we oftentimes forget to have for ourselves. ❤️‍🩹

But why?

My hunch is because in our society we are pressured to be perfect and act perfect, when in reality, life is anything but.

We will be put into hard situations, say something we don’t mean, struggle to balance it all, all while society is telling us we SHOULD be able to do it all, achieve it all AND feel fulfilled while behaving perfectly.

And when we don’t or can’t achieve this, we blame ourselves, convincing ourselves it’s because we didn’t try hard enough, are a terrible person, or just simply aren’t enough.

What if you gave yourself a break?

With self-compassion, we can practice acknowledging this and give ourselves the grace we likely give others in difficult spots.

Instead of saying “I can’t believe I said that in the meeting, I’m such an idiot! I’ll never get anywhere. I clearly need to work overtime to make sure I don’t mess up like that again.”

Try viewing it from a perspective of self-compassion… “I am feeling embarrassment and frustration over what I said in that meeting, but i can acknowledge that making mistakes is a normal part of life. I am human and am able to learn and grow. What does my body need right now? (Pause and connect with body). I could really use a break.. let me go outside for a few minutes, reconnect and come down from this activating moment.”

Take a moment for kindness and self compassion today and see how it feels. 🥰

The art of ~slowing down~ is the easiest way to assist in regulating a dysregulated nervous system. When we are rushing, we feel a sense of urgency that is often unhelpful. 🤍

Slow it down and see how it feels 😮‍💨

7 ways I as a therapist work on staying sane in a world that sometimes feels… the opposite. 🤪

These are all things I try to incorporate throughout my week, but I’m certainly not perfect. Just like anyone else, some weeks are “better” than others, but I know what I need to do to ensure I’m feeling my personal best when I start feeling off beat.

Here’s to another year of growing and staying grounded in the present. 🤍

Wow. 1 year of Emerge Counseling. 1 year of showing up, being brave even when I was feeling unsteady, learning, and growing. I feel immense amounts of gratitude and joy for the community I have established and the environment of warmth and compassion that has been grown over the past year.

As I think back upon the individuals I have been able to meet with over the past year, I can’t help but think I would not have gotten the chance had I not taken the massive leap of faith by opening up Emerge. I also deeply recognize each person that has walked through that office door this year, and how they have displayed just as much incredible courage and perseverance in opening up and doing the work it takes (in and out of therapy) to be vulnerable and make change happen.

I feel so honored to be trusted in holding each piece of precious information my clients share with me. Whether I am celebrating in their successes, partnering in their sorrow, being a support in a rocky transition in life, or exploring their past, I will never take for granted the privilege it is to do so.

I want to thank all of those, near and far, who have helped and supported me along this journey— it is felt and so incredibly appreciated!

Here’s to many more years of growing this community, taking chances, adapting to change, and honoring our emotions.

With love and gratitude,
Anika 🤍
