There are some new faces here, so we thought we’d say hi. 👋 We’re so glad you’re here.

At Lakeside, we believe community is just as essential to health as a nourishing diet or exercise, and that community can exist both in person and online. Research shows that health and happiness are contagious. Studies like the Framingham Heart Study demonstrate that behaviors such as smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness can spread through social networks.

✨The longest-lived people on the planet don’t do health alone. ✨In the blue zone of Okinawa, strong social circles called moais are considered a key factor of longevity. Moais are the Japanese concept of connection.

We’re inspired by this concept, which is why we’re intentional about building community in multiple ways: through our Group Visit Program in the clinic, and here on Instagram as a virtual space for learning, support, and connection. Whether you’re cooking along with us, learning about hormones, or simply feeling less alone in your health journey, this space is meant to support you.

You won’t find us demonizing foods or participating in the health fear mongering that’s ever so present on the internet. We believe in positivity, balance, and science. 🙌🏼

We’d love to get to know you! Tell us in the comments who you are, where you’re from, and what you’re hoping to learn here. 💛

I have a sweet tooth 🍫🦷 and I have dessert every single night. Rather than deprive myself, I find mindfully eating the dessert to be a balanced approach. I try to be intentional about my choices- indulging in quality dark chocolate or homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Sweets are part of traditions, celebrations, and holiday gatherings, and it’s simply not realistic for most people to avoid sugar completely. A lot of people however can feel out of control when it comes to sweets.

Part of having a positive and balanced relationship with food is to be able to enjoy the foods you love without feeling out of control or guilty when you indulge.

🧂🌿I typically don’t recommend drastically cutting salt intake. We need it- for the transportation of nutrients in and out of cells and the maintenance of proper nerve transmission. It’s all about balancing sodium with potassium.

Our diet is very different from our ancestors, especially in terms of the sodium-to-potassium ratio. We eat way more sodium in relation to potassium. Cutting down on sodium in the form of processed foods can absolutely help lower blood pressure, but going one step further and focusing on including more potassium-rich foods in your diet is even more effective.

Where do we get potassium?

🌱 PLANTS! 🌱 It’s estimated 98% of Americans are not getting enough potassium. Here are the top potassium-rich foods:

🫘 White beans (Great northern, navy, or cannellini)
🍌 Bananas
💚 Celery
🥑 Avocados
🥥 Coconut water
🥔 Potatoes and sweet potatoes
🥬 Green leafy vegetables (spinach, Swiss chard, kale)
🍉 Watermelon

How much potassium do you need? Aim to consume 3,500–4,700 mg daily.

Shift your focus to the vibrant foods nature provides and watch processed foods take a backseat. It’s all about abundance vs scarcity: focusing on foods you can have (plants!) versus focusing on foods to avoid.

And when it comes to salt, I like seasoning my food with pink Himalayan sea salt 🩷

And if you need more support beyond nutrition, let’s chat. There are a lot of effective natural treatment options for high blood pressure.

💚 Instead of going low-carb, focus on smart-carb. The carb-to-fiber ratio is a guideline, especially for packaged grains, where a lower number is better, with 10:1 (10 carbs to 1 fiber) or even better 5:1 being ideal targets.

A 5:1 ratio of carbs to fiber is what we tend to find in nature, in fruits and vegetables for example. As always, let nature guide your plate.

✨Why is this important? ✨

The lower the carb-to-fiber ratio, the better you’ll manage blood sugar, boost energy, and support weight loss. And not to mention better digestion 💩

It’s all about BALANCING carbs (with fiber!) instead of cutting them out.
