What is a TRJJ Certification and why do you need it?
“Trauma Responsive Jiu Jitsu Certification (TRJJ) by Clint Davis Counseling and Integrative Wellness (online and in-person options)
Martial Arts have always been a tool to help people deal with spiritual, mental, and physical health. As our society continues to churn out human beings who are less resilient, overly traumatized, and under supported, the martial arts community and Jiu Jitsu community especially, have become a haven for those looking to build community, self-confidence and searching for healing.
Unfortunately, without proper basic training, we are continuing to hear stories of abuse, sexual assault, and bullying in our beloved communities and even within Jiu Jitsu schools. We are saddened to hear of people ending their journey with Jiu-Jitsu, before it even begins! What if we could change that? At TRJJ we believe we can!!
Jiu-Jitsu can be therapeutic, but it is not therapy. It can treat symptoms, but without intentionality and resources it misses the root causes. We need to make the implicit, explicit when it comes to mental health!
Master Pedro Sauer himself says, “We are not running Jiu-Jitsu schools, but mental hospitals.” All around the world, we believe this is more true than ever before. We want our gyms to be a respite and shelter for all those who need Jiu-Jitsu to be a part of their healing journey!
Jiu Jitsu attracts specific categories of people on to your mats, that Trauma Responsive Jiu Jitsu trainings would love to help you protect, equip, and keep training for years to come:
1. Survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. (Men, Women, and Children)
2. First Responders. (Military, fire and rescue, Leo’s)
3. Children who are being or have been bullied online or in person.
4. Anyone with Neuro-diversity. (“on the spectrum”)
5. Anyone with trauma or struggling mentally. (So... everyone)
All of these groups fight unique mental health battles, that need special attention when entering and staying in our gyms. Each one of these people could be a fantastic training partner for someone and a highly successful member of our gyms.
When instructors know the science and research that supports people in a trauma responsive way, they can learn to provide an environment rich in security, but also one that builds resiliency! When your instructors know how to support, resource, and guide people who struggle with unique circumstances and backgrounds your gym will thrive.”
