Our clinic was filled with the sounds of lively, uplifting pop music recently thanks to our friends at I Am Courageous! A non-profit musical initiative founded by husband and wife Justin and Michelle (and often joined by daughter Gabi), I Am Courageous is dedicated to providing encouraging musical entertainment for kids in healthcare settings. The duo performed in areas throughout the facility, and even took requests from patients for their favorite pop tunes. Thank you for sharing your music and enthusiasm with us! ❤️🎶

Shriners Children’s Shreveport is proud to share an exciting medical first for our area! Our own Dr. Rachel Bishop, in collaboration with Dr. Christina Notarriani of both our medical staff and Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, conducted the region’s first endoscopic cranial vault surgery for the treatment of craniosynostosis. The condition occurs when the bones in an infant’s skull fuse prematurely, interfering with proper skull and brain growth. Dr. Bishop and her team performed the surgery on a 3-month old boy, using the minimally-invasive procedure to help reduce operative and overall recovery times.

Congratulations to Dr. Bishop, Dr. Notarriani and team on this milestone collaboration!

Sebastian has been a patient at Shriners Children’s Shreveport since he was 6 months old. He was born with hemifacial microsomia, a congenital condition that results in underdevelopment of the bones and tissue in half of the face. Under the care of oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Rachel Bishop, Sebastian underwent a mandibular distraction, a surgical procedure that involves the placement of a distractor device to increase the space within the jaw and allow new bone to form. Following removal of the distraction hardware, Sebastian has been undergoing regular follow-ups to monitor his growth and plan for future procedures.

“Dr. Bishop and the Shriners Children’s team have gone above and beyond when Sebastian is in their care,” said Lexie, Sebastian’s mom. “It means a lot to us seeing them care for Sebastian as if he was their own child.”

These days, Sebastian is an active and happy 3-year-old. He loves playing ball, tractors, and tag with his two brothers, and watching his favorite movie “Woody” (Toy Story). He is gearing up to begin Pre-K 3 this fall.

July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month, and we're celebrating by sharing stories of our amazing kids! 💪💙
