We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Jerry McLarty, PhD.
Dr. McLarty joined LSU Health Shreveport in February 2002 as Professor of Medicine and Director of Cancer Prevention and Control at the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. Over his twenty-three years of service, he left a profound and lasting impact through his scholarship, leadership, mentorship, and dedication to community health.
He was essential in founding the Partners in Wellness mobile cancer screening program. Because of his dedication, thousands of Louisianians, across many corners of our state were screened for breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer.
Prior to his time at LSUHS, Dr. McLarty served his country as a NASA scientist, even working on the calculations needed to get the lunar module to the moon and back.
Dr. McLarty retired in December 2025 and transitioned to the role of Emeritus Professor at LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport. His legacy of scholarship, service, and compassion will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to work with him.

This World Cancer Day, let’s make sure no one fights alone — or too far from home.🎗️🏠
At Feist-Weiller, closing the care gap means more than providing treatment. It means building the infrastructure to bring the world’s most advanced cancer therapies right here to North Louisiana.
Proceeds from Life Savers 2026: Golden Age Gala directly fund the renovation of the McDade Hospitality House, which means:
1️⃣ Our Shreveport-Bossier community has access to cutting-edge cancer treatments close to home.
2️⃣ Patients traveling from our rural communities can receive advanced care without the added burden of wondering where they’ll sleep or how they’ll afford it.
At the heart of Life Savers is a simple but powerful goal: keeping patients and families close to care when they need it most.
✨ Step into the spotlight with us on February 12.
