At a time when many in the LGBTQ+ community are feeling the weight of our country’s political climate, it is worth remembering that q***r joy, pride, and community have always mattered. Gathering, celebrating, and showing up for one another has always been part of this community.
The first official Pride was held in 1970, one year after the Stonewall uprising, when LGBTQ+ people marched publicly to demand dignity, safety, and equal rights. Pride has always been both a celebration and a reminder that progress is possible, even when it feels slow or when there is pushback.
Here in Shreveport, PACE presented its first Pride in the Park in 2014, the first all-ages LGBTQ+ festival held in the city. That inaugural gathering brought together vendors, artists, informational booths, entertainers, families, and allies.
Over the years the event has continued to bring people together. It stands as a reminder that community matters and that, year after year, we keep showing up for one another.
