The Massachusetts Medical Interpreter Training program invites you to submit a presentation proposal for the 21st Annual Paving the Way to Health Care Access Conference happening May 15 & 16, 2026 at UMass Boston.
This year's theme is: Human Connections: Interpreting in an Evolving Landscape
Presentation proposals can be in any of the following areas:
• Language access and LEP patients’ rights
• Medical terminology and healthcare concepts
• Interpreting in specific medical specialties
• Culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare services
• Skills needed for and challenges on interpreting in medical setting
• Interpreting skills in simultaneous mode
• Work benefits or challenges for contract, freelance, and staff interpreters, translators, and bilingual employees
• Applications of technology that improve access to care, interpreter training, and on-the-job tools for working interpreters
• Healthcare interpreting for ASL interpreters
• Interpreter health and wellness
Presenters will receive a complimentary conference registration as an honorarium.

Deadline to register for testing is Friday, August 8th

This 60-hour comprehensive program covers:
• Interpreting Skills
• Code of Ethics
• Triadic Communication Skills
• Standards of Practice
• Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
• Medical Terminology in English and Target Language
When you register, you will pick a date to take the written assessment exam which needs to be passed before being invited for the Oral Exam.
Mandatory Medical Language Assessment Exam Dates (pick one):
- Monday, August 11th from 6pm – 8pm EST
- Thursday, August 14th from 6pm – 8pm EST

Thank you attendees, sponsors, presenters and conference staff for making the 20th Paving the Way to Health Care Access the best one yet! With recording breaking attendance numbers - 240 on Friday and 183 on Saturday - attendees came from 24 states and 2 presenters from Portugal!

Day One is off to a great start! Thank you to Lisa Colombo, DNP, MHA, RN, Executive Vice Chancellor, ForHealth Consulting at UMass Chan Medical School for welcoming over 200 attendees to the 20th Paving The Way to Health Care Access Conference at UMass Boston. Lisa also presented Yilu Ma, Director of the Interpreter Services Department at the Brigham and Women's Hospital with the Tony Winsor Award.

Getting to the Conference at UMass Boston, 100 Morrissey Blvd, Boston MA 02125:

If you are driving:
When entering the UMass Boston traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto University Drive West. Turn right onto University Drive North and turn right on Columbia Point. Parking is available in the QUAD LOT and CAMPUS CENTER garage. If these lots are full try LOT D.
Parking Fees:
Friday $15.00 per day
Saturday $10 per day
Parking is paid using an app indicated on signs in parking lots.

If you are being dropped off:
When entering the UMass Boston traffic circle, take 1st exit onto University Drive South. Follow signs for the Campus Center.
