Births,Babies and Beyond NJ Births, Babies and Beyond is a practice dedicated to educating and assisting new parents-to-be with their most important life transition

About Us
Births, Babies and Beyond was started as an idea after many shifts of seeing first time moms-to be, and dads-to be, struggle to cope in the labor room. As a labor room nurse, in a very high volume maternity hospital, married to a psychologist, I would often think of women whom I just interacted with and became very concerned about their preparedness for heading home with a newborn. If these women were struggling in the labor room, how were they going to cope at 3am with a newborn who has been screaming for hours? If the behavior they displayed while in the labor room was any indication, I was very concerned. After speaking with peers and researching current statistics my concerns were heightened. I realized that women, especially first time moms, really needed a place that could provide a range of services for them, both prior to delivery and throughout their journey as parents. And so the concept of Birth, Babies and Beyond was developed. Teamed with Abrams Psychological Services, we are able to provide any and every service a family could need. There is no right way to give birth. Being educated on your birth is a high priority.

When parents recall their births, I often hear information that makes me question how well they understood the process. It’s not to invalidate what they experienced. More to learn how I can educate parents-to-be more effectively.

Anyone can recite information from a book, but having an educator who thoroughly understands the process from years of bedside experience matters.

Research supports our S.E.L.F. model: Rest, (Sleep), movement (Exercise), nourishment (Food), and restorative pleasure (Laughter/leisure) all play a critical role in postpartum brain health and emotional well-being.

💜Better sleep is tied to lower postpartum depression/anxiety

💜Postpartum exercise is linked with fewer depressive and anxiety symptoms.

💜Adherence to a brain-healthy eating pattern is associated with lower odds of postpartum depressive symptoms

Who you hire for your prenatal education and postpartum support matters. I still work bedside in Labor and Delivery and Lactation. I have worked in a level IV, high volume hospital down to a Birth Center.

I can comfortably say I’ve had the privilege to be a part of thousands of deliveries and support hundreds of postpartum families .

The birth world is filled with many certifications. The experience of who you trust with your education and postpartum support matters.

Great example of how positioning matters in labor. Bringing knees in and ankles out, opens the outlet of the pelvis allowing the baby to descend easier.

How often did you change positions during the pushing phase of your birth?

Really great post by LALactation. Having a frenulum is a NORMAL anatomical variation.. it’s the function that matters. The current AAP guidance is to intervene when function is impaired.

✅ if your baby is unable to maintain a latch
✅ if latching is painful and creating damage (and isn’t correctable by position or compression
✅ if your baby is not gaining weight due to not transferring milk affectively

These may all be reasons a release is needed. But even these reasons can have other causes, which is why thorough evaluation is necessary.

Lip ties (and their pictures on social media) drive me clinically nuts, because there is so much misinformation about who actually has one

I am the first to refer to the appropriate health care provider (pediatric dentist or ENT) when a true lip tie is not allowing proper function of the lips and is impacting the success of digestion or breastfeeding. But let’s understand a few things:
✏️According to a 1994 study by Flinck, who looked at >1000 babies, 77% of them had a frenulum that inserted “low” on to the gumline. A further 17% had a frenulum that inserted into the palate. So 94% of babies have a really low gum insertion - that is NOT the definition of a lip tie. Having a low set frenulum cannot be the only criteria used for release
✏️There is currently no published criteria defining a normal frenulum vs a lip tie. That does not mean a lip shouldn’t be addressed when function is being impacted. But that band between lip and gums is supposed to be there to some extent to help anchor your lips to your face for proper movement and facial development
✏️Lip tie, when it is present, can certainly get in the way of a normal latch. A lip tie may cause increased air intake (contributing to reflux and gas), breast pain from the lips gripping too tightly to the breast, contribute to lip blisters muscle compensations, or not allow the baby to be able to maintain the latch through the whole feeding. While the lips are important for feeding, I’m more concerned about the tongue for obtaining a normal latch. The lip often compensates for the tongue

True diagnosis of lip tie is all about anatomy (what does it look like), physiology (what does it do), and symptoms (what is it causing). A lip tie will always impact function of the lip by restricting its expected movement. The upper lip should be soft and move to spread and pucker the lips without difficulty. The upper lip should play a passive role when breastfeeding, gently rounding to maintain the seal at the breast so milk doesn’t leak out and not gripping the breast

You cannot tell if it’s tied from a picture, a dynamic, hands on assessment is needed.

Social media makes you believe you need a lot of “stuff” to take care of your newborn. Your newborn needs YOU. They need your warmth with skin to skin. They need to feel safe and secure. They need you to respond to their cues.

Taking prenatal education classes is vital to understanding your baby. Learning what is normal vs concerning, understanding that crying is communicating a need and that hunger has a separate language is huge. Realizing that movement and white noise is comforting.

Registration for all our prenatal classes is open now!
