Continuing our series on awakening the 5 senses with Ayurveda - let’s talk about taste!⁣
⁠⁣
Taste is the pleasure sense. It relates to water, which brings nourishment, ease and enjoyment.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
In springtime, warm, invigorating spices like ginger, cinnamon and black pepper are great for tastes. See my recent post on ways to enjoy ginger!⁣

A Kitchari diet is helpful during this season to get rid of buildup over the winter.⁣
⁠⁣
Mindful eating is also important. When you go to taste something this season, ask yourself: “What is the essence of your appetite?” Take a few deep breaths.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
Instead of another drink or more food, perhaps you actually want to go home, move your body, or to have a one-on-one conversation with those you are sharing your time with.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
Also remember that taste might not always come in the form of a cookie on your tongue. Taste each MOMENT. Savor it. Recognize the sweetness.⁠⁣

Continuing our series on awakening the five senses - let’s talk about touch and smell! ⁣
⁠⁣
Touch connects us to our breath and to the air element, which rules movement and change.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
Smell is the most primal of the senses and relates to the earth element, which brings stability, structure and a feeling of being at home.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
Three practices to give a little care to our touch and smell senses at the same time:⁣

1. Baths with a few drops of essential oil. My personal favorite scent right now is orange blossom, but we use warming essential oils right now in the spring.⁣

2. Abhyanga self-massage with a warm essential oil-infused oil. ⁣

Here’s an invigorating massage oil recipe for Kapha season (Spring): Almond oil, basil, bergamot, clove, lavender and sage or even eucalyptus mixed with salt for a bath. Inhale deeply and allow yourself to indulge!⁣

3. Get that blood flowing and get yourself moving with yoga and brisk walking.⁣
⁠⁣

Continuing our series on awakening the five senses - let’s talk about sound!⁣
⁠⁣
Our capacity to hear relates to the element of Ether, which is the space around us.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
To nurture your hearing sense, make space to hear and be heard. Use truthful communication, self-expression and creativity to balance out the chatter.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
Instead of laborious small talk, make a conscious effort to ask how someone else is doing. Inquire about their life, family and wellbeing, and LISTEN deeply to what they are sharing. Express your gratitude for your friendship and the invitation to be together. Allow your questions and your caring to create connection.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
And when you are talked-out, listen to kirtan chanting or connect and attune to a singing bowl! ⁣

Another self-care tip for the sound sense is easy as can be: silence. It’s free and readily available. and very valuable for wellbeing!⁠⁣

Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth for all cycles, offering awakening, warmth and growth. Kapha predominates during this time, as the forces of earth and water are strongest. Pitta emerges in later spring as the sun begins to peak. ⁣

This is a great time to tune in and awaken our 5 senses. In the Ayurvedic perspective, each sense is a way for us to know our own nature on a subtler level.⁣

Today, let’s talk about sight. What we take in visually connects to the fire element: transformation, digestion, and power. ⁣
⁠⁣
It’s so important to take notice of what we are ingesting visually. There are a lot of ads, emails and sparkly things vying for our visual attention, but in order to stay steady we have to moderate what we take in through our eyes.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
Remember that resting our senses is part of what keeps them healthy and helpful. ⁠⁣
Give your eyes as well as your mind some extra rest. ⁣

Sit outside in nature, turn off the screens, stare at the clouds in the sky, or take moments to visually notice how you’ve curated your belongings and home and what you love about them. ⁣

You could also lay back and gently drape a warm towel over your eyes to honor them and give them a break - my favorite.⁠⁣
⁠⁣
While sight and eye rest may not be the first thing to come to mind when thinking of wellness, I encourage you to take notice and give some of these ideas a try. I’d love to hear if it resonates with you or makes you feel differently in any way!

I’m sure you’re all familiar with the spicy ginger root, but today let’s chat about what it can do for us and how we can use it!⁠⁣

Starting with what Ayurveda tells us ginger does for the body⁠⁣
⁠⁣
🔥 reduces the sensation of pain⁠⁣
🔥 helps with nausea⁠⁣
🔥 relieves flatulence⁠⁣
🔥 induces sweating⁠⁣
🔥 stimulates digestive fire⁠⁣
🔥 helps clear mucus⁠⁣
🔥 gets circulation flowing⁠⁣
⁠⁣
Now for some ginger tips:⁠⁣
⁠⁣
👉🏼 You can peel the root with a small teaspoon, which will yield less waste than using a knife or peeler.⁠⁣
👉🏼 But in fact, you don’t actually need to peel ginger and can eat the skin! It’s an extra little bit of fiber. Just make sure it’s clean of any dirt.⁠⁣
👉🏼 Ginger freezes well, so if it’s going bad you can freeze it whole and grate it when you need it, or grate it and then freeze.⁠⁣
👉🏼 While dried/powdered ginger still has powerful health benefits, it does undergo nutritional changes in the process and fresh ginger ⁠is superior.⁠⁣
👉🏼 Not sure what to do with fresh ginger? You can use it for tea, soups, stews, rice, kitchari, kimchi, marinades, smoothies, porridges, dressings, baked goods - pretty much anything!⁠⁣
👉🏼 Ginger is tridoshic and aids digestive fire for all constitutions.⁠⁣

Jai Hanuman! It’s Hanuman Jayanti and a full moon this Friday-Saturday. Want to know why we celebrate this cute monkey god’s birthday?⁣

Hanuman symbolizes the aspect of us that is devotion and courage. He represents inner and outer strength. We need these qualities to overcome the karmas in our lives.⁣

The Ramayana tells of of his devotion to Lord Rama. The evil king had stolen Rama’s wife Sita and taken her far away, to an island mountain across the sea. Hanuman not only helped to rescue her but also leapt across mountains and oceans, and even lifted an entire mountain to bring its healing herbs to Rama’s brother to save his life. His unwavering devotion, faith and commitment are just the qualities we need when facing hard times. He represents defiance against oppression.⁣

Saturn is a planet whose influence you might want to have a look at in your life, and where Hanuman’s traits can help you. This planet of karma brings lessons of our lives forward for us to deal with. We may not be happy about it, there will be some pain. But even in the spiritual world there is a version of “no pain, no gain”. We can lessen suffering significantly by adjusting our attitudes and creating the right environment to overcome karmas and face lessons with more ease. Jyotish astrology even gives us remedies to help.⁣

Saturn moves very slowly and has just moved into the sign of Pisces for the next 2.5 years, where it has not been since 1998. What was happening in your life then? Were there lessons/themes that may be coming around again?⁣

Saturn in Pisces asks us to align with spirituality, creativity and emotional depth. We can lean into Hanuman’s qualities for some needed support.⁣
