If you’ve ever wondered why our logo has a rider with their hands in the air…. It’s because we do warmups as part of our mounted lessons. And as you’ll see from this archived picture, now used for our profile, that warm up often involves stretching to the sky! See the comparison?

Boosted by a first-time, $150,000 "jumbo" grant from the Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC) Foundation, CANTER — the renowned program that promotes education and independence for those with disabilities — is planning construction of an indoor arena at its property off Moson Road in Sierra Vista.

The Foundation grant to CANTER was one of 13 awards to education entities throughout the SSVEC service territory, totaling more than $450,000. More than 80 applications were received for Phase 2 of the grant program, bringing the combined total of awards issued by the Foundation to just under $1 million in 2025.

"Foundation funds are generated primarily from unclaimed member equity payments and community donations," said Randy Redmond, President of the SSVEC Board of Directors. "Consistent with the principles of our Cooperative, these funds are reinvested in the community and in education opportunities."

CANTER is the Cochise Area Network of Therapeutic Equestrian Resources. Founded in 1993, the program has benefited hundreds of local students and adults, using multiple PATH-certified instructors with diverse backgrounds to effectively meet the specific needs of those they serve.

The activities offered by the program helps participants develop decision-making and problem-solving skills, and builds strength and confidence. The indoor arena project will dramatically improve opportunities for riders and trainers to use the facility during poor weather.
We have a problem with wind during some parts of the year. It creates a serious distraction for our riders and horses, Having a facility that allows us to offer our programs indoors will make a real improvement in what we can offer to our students.

Each year the SSVEC Board of Directors reviews Foundation finances and determines the amount allocated to youth, teacher and education entity awards.

"This is the second year that the SSVEC Board of Directors has approved allocating Foundation funds for education grants," said Kristin Gray, SSVEC Community Relations Manager. "This year, for the first time, our program featured a jumbo grant to assist educational organizations in creating opportunities that will make a significant impact on our community."

We are so excited to announce that we were the SSVEC jumbo grant recipient for 2025! This is going to help us build phase one of our indoor arena and we are so thankful for their support and choosing our organization when there are so many in the area doing great works! With this arena, we will be able to continue what we’ve been doing for the last 30 years, hopefully for 30 more! We will be having an open house soon so that all of our stakeholders may come and celebrate the impending groundbreaking. So please keep your eye out for that information.

I am a lesson horse.
I am a horse that isn’t as recognized as the top hunter jumpers, the best western pleasure horse, or the 1D barrel horse, I am a lesson horse. I am the backbone of the foundation to do all of those things. I am a lesson horse.

I am not loved by one person. I am loved by several people. I don’t have my person, I have my people. I am a lesson horse.

I will teach your child and yourself more than just to ride. I will bring your child out of their shell. I will teach your child about life. I will be yours and their shoulder to cry on. I am a lesson horse.

I will bring my family the joy of teaching kids. I will bring my families business growth. I am so loved by my family, even if they don’t express it everyday. My family allows others to show me love and enjoy me. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of your childs’ journey on a lesson horse, they will out grow me. They will find one that jumps higher, a horse that is show quality, a horse much faster than me. But, I will never outgrow being a lesson horse. I will be the one that loved your child and helped your child grow into the rider and person they are. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. But, I will love your child more than any horse can. I will be the backbone of the business, the family, and your child. Don’t forget about me, I am a lesson horse.

I am a lesson horse.

Our Story

CANTER was founded in 1993 to provide Equine Assisted Activities (EAA) to individuals with disabilities in the Cochise County area. When our program began, horses were brought to a temporary riding facility hosted by a volunteer. In 1998, 17 acres of bare land were donated to CANTER by a stroke patient who was one of our clients. Over the next four years, land was cleared, fenced, and a riding arena was established. Stables were erected for the horses; an office, tack room and classroom were added. In 2002, a manufactured home was placed on the property allowing a full time facility manager/caretaker to reside at the facility and care for the horses and grounds. Today, the facility is home to nine specially trained CANTER therapeutic riding horses.

CANTER is accredited by PATH International, the national organization that sets the standards for therapeutic riding centers throughout the country. CANTER is one of only four Premier Accredited riding centers in the state of Arizona. This accreditation results from on-site inspections by PATH International in which our programs, instructors, horses, facilities, volunteers, and documentation are reviewed.

CANTER (Cochise Area Network of Therapeutic Equestrian Resources) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that offers therapeutic riding. CANTER's vision is to serve all eligible individuals in Cochise County, using multiple instructors with diverse skills and training methods to safely and effectively meet the specific needs and requirements of its students.
