Generally speaking, the average variable cost per mile to operate a vehicle for hire is about $0.50. That covers fuel and maintenance. Adding vehicle depreciation, insurance, driver compensation, and an ethical level of profit, and the average per-mile rate charged by most livery (vehicle for hire) services is $2-$4 per mile.
Sierra Vista, AZ to PHX is 182 miles, one way. The break even cost of that trip is $91. The average fair market rate for that trip is between $364-$728, depending on the vehicle. Which is why most shuttle services will try to split that cost across as many passengers as possible to achieve a $50-60 per person rate, not including any additional surcharges they may apply (baggage, wait times, stopped fees, drop fees, etc). This puts our $360 price point for that trip at the very bottom of the range for the market, and that's in a new 14 passenger Sprinter Transit vehicle.
