It's the 2nd day of a New Year on the heels of a year that pushed everyone and everything to their limits. Normally, people would be filled with a sense of hope and we would be discussing the beauty of new beginnings and new adventures; convinced the bad habits of the previous year wouldn’t follow us into the new. But this year is different, for many it feels we have emerged from a dark cave, battered and bewildered, almost fearful of the new and what changes may still be forced upon us. For some of us, the new, no longer holds joy, no longer sparks creativity or passion.

If this is where you are my friend, I encourage you to read with me this week the book of 1 Peter every day. These 5 chapters of the Bible will remind you and uplift that as much as things change on Earth, we serve a timeless God. And as much as we fear the new here, there is a New that Christ creates in us that never gets boring or burdensome.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy, He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3

And that is just the beginning of the book.

For me the word brings up a vision of an old monk kneeling to pray before God, surrounded by trees, a babbling stream nearby, song birds happily singing. Utter calm and peace. As Christians, we are to discipline our thoughts to mirror those of our Lord. A disciplined and well order mind goes against every human desire we have. Daily time in the Word and in prayer is the only way to switch our thoughts for God's thoughts and our desires for God's desires. Do not think with your feelings.
