Do you love a good Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage?
Here are some of the ways you can benefit from this awesome modality:

Muscle Tension Relief: Targets deep layers of muscle and connective tissue to release chronic patterns of tension, promoting relaxation and alleviating pain.

Improved Posture: By releasing tension in muscles and realigning deeper layers of tissue, deep tissue massage can help improve posture, reducing strain on joints and muscles.

Increased Range of Motion: Deep Tissue work can help break up scar tissue and adhesions, allowing for greater flexibility and range of motion in joints.

Pain Relief: Deep tissue massage can be effective in reducing pain from conditions such as chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injuries, and sports-related injuries.

Stress Reduction: Like other forms of massage, deep tissue massage can promote relaxation and reduce stress levels by triggering the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and serotonin.

Improved Blood Circulation: The pressure applied during deep tissue massage helps to improve blood flow to the muscles, which can aid in the healing process and promote overall health.

Breakdown of Scar Tissue: It can help break down scar tissue and adhesions that may have formed as a result of injury, surgery, or repetitive motion, improving mobility and reducing pain.

Enhanced Athletic Performance: Athletes often use deep tissue massage to help with recovery after intense training sessions or competitions. It can reduce muscle soreness, speed up recovery, and prevent injuries by addressing muscular imbalances and tightness.

You know you're supposed to be foam rolling and stretching your muscles, to keep your body strong and healthy. But what if you can barely squeeze in your workouts in the first place -- let alone 10 extra minutes at the beginning and end of each session?

Before you give up on your recovery routine entirely, we're about to make it easier for you to manage. While both foam rolling and stretching have their merits, if you've only got time for one, you should grab your trusty foam roller, says DailyBurn Fitness/Nutrition Coach Sarah Snyder. "Foam rolling gives you all the same benefits of stretching as well as added benefits," she says.

"When you're stretching a cold muscle, your body goes into defensive mode, and what happens is your workout performance is hindered," Snyder says. Static stretches can essentially "freeze up" your muscles, preventing you from getting a full range of motion when you're on the move, and potentially leading to injury.

That's why foam rolling before a workout can be a better use of your time. "The techniques you have to use for foam rolling help engage your muscles, so you're already doing a little bit of exercising when you're warming up with foam rolling," Snyder says. Bonus points if you can add some dynamic movements to your warm-up as well.

After a workout, it may be tempting to collapse into a sweaty heap. But your body can reap real benefits from taking a few minutes to relieve the tension built up in your muscles. And while static stretches post-workout may help lengthen muscle and improve flexibility, foam rolling does all this and more by also targeting and relieving tension in the myofascial layer of your body. "Stretching doesn't get the myofascial layer, the connective tissue that is protecting all of your muscles," Snyder says. "With foam rolling, you're able to break up some of the tension there that has built up." (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/foam-roller_b_8111178)

If you are unsure quite how to position yourself on a foam roller to release particular muscle groups, I can help! I am available by appointment to help walk you through using a foam roller correctly throughout the body to achieve optimal self-myofascial release before your next major training session. Send me a message directly for more info.

💥INFLAMMATION AFTER EXERCISE💥

•Recent research through the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, indicates that massage therapy reduces infl ammation of skeletal muscle acutely damaged through exercise.

•The study found evidence at the cellular level that massage therapy may affect inflammation in a way similar to anti inflammatory medications.

•Why is this important? As the population ages, studies suggest the incidence of osteoarthritis will increase by 40% by 2025. Further, research has shown that conventional therapies are limited in effectiveness and toxicities associated with some drugs limit use, leaving surgery one of the main ways the symptoms of osteoarthritis are relieved.

•This recent research, combined with a 2006 study that also showed massage therapy was effective in reducing pain associated with osteoarthritis, provides evidence that people with this condition might benefit from weekly, 60-minute massage therapy sessions. (amtamassage.org)

7 Reasons Why All Athletes Should Get Regular Massages

Injury Prevention: Massage for athletes before and after physical activity helps to loosen tense, tight muscles and joints, improving flexibility and range of motion.

Faster Muscle Recovery: Post-workout pain from DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and overexertion can stretch out the time needed for muscle recovery between intense workouts. Massage improves circulation, sending oxygen and substantive healing nutrients to areas of soreness, which ameliorates pain quicker and helps athletes spring back into action with ease.

Better Sleep: A number of studies have produced dramatic results highlighting the efficacy of massage for better sleep.

Increased Circulation & Elimination of Waste: During a massage, something called vasodilation happens. This is when blood vessels begin to dilate and blood pressure lowers, which allows blood to flow quicker and more freely throughout the body. This is especially important for athletes because this ramp-up of blood flow allows more nutrients to reach muscles, which aids them in being strong and healthy.

Increased Joint Range of Motion and Flexibility: Athletes training in a particular sport have a tendency to damage one or a few areas in their body because of over conditioning and repetitive motion.

Improved Soft Tissue Function and Recovery: Athletes training in a particular sport have a tendency to damage one or a few areas in their body because of over conditioning and repetitive motion.

Reduced Pain and Relaxes the Body

If you’ve ever had a deep tissue massage, you’ll note that they aren’t always relaxing, and sometimes, they’re even a bit painful. But it’s what’s going on inside that counts. Targeted massage breaks down invaders that occur after strenuous workouts and injury that create pain, helping to flush out inflammation and heal small injuries very quickly. When muscles are tight and tense, they hurt, and massage also helps muscles sink and relax back into the positions where they function properly and feel good.

Mobility is defined as your ability to move purposefully as you go through your day. It is the foundation for living a healthy and independent life. Mobility comprises all the skills required for everyday living: physical stamina, strength, balance, coordination, and range of motion. The importance of mobility becomes clear when you rise out of bed, shower, manage a flight of stairs, walk a half-mile, get in and out of a car, or carry groceries. Mobility also helps us avoid falls and prevent injuries, and allows older adults to live longer on their own. In short, mobility helps you stay “in the game.”

People often wonder about the difference between mobility and flexibility. To be clear, flexibility is a key part of maintaining mobility and is the ability for joints to move freely through a range of motion and without pain. The gentle stretching and flowing movements of yoga, tai chi, and qi gong can help with mobility by improving flexibility, balance, and core strength. You can also perform home stretching workouts that focus on trouble spots like shoulders, hips, and knees.

Foam rolling can be performed prior to and after your workouts. Before exercise, rolling will increase tissue elasticity, range of motion and circulation (blood flow). This can help you move better during your workout and protect you from injury.

Foam rolling post-workout is a great way to enhance recovery. Focus on all of the major muscles you just worked, with an extra emphasis on the areas that feel problematic. By stimulating blood flow in affected areas, you’ll dramatically increase oxygen to your sore muscle fibers and reduce recovery time. In fact, most elite athletes get massages regularly for this reason.

While nothing can quite replicate a good sports massage, you can enjoy many of the same benefits at home (or between massages) with a foam roller.
