2026 Vision Correction Referrals for Siletz Tribal Members

Siletz Community Health Clinic (SCHC) is offering a limited vision correction benefit for eligible Siletz Tribal members through Purchase Referred Care (PRC).

About the Benefit

This program helps tribal members improve vision through elective surgical procedures, such as LASIK, PRK, or implantable lenses, depending on medical suitability. The goal is to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. Final procedure type is determined through a medical evaluation.

Coverage Details

PRC covers the procedure and related pre- and post-operative fees up to $4,500. Any costs above this amount are the patient’s responsibility.

General Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

· Be a PRC-eligible Siletz Tribal member
· Be 20 years or older
· Be in good general and eye health
· Have stable vision for at least 12 months
· Diabetes patients must have A1C ≤ 7.0
· Not be pregnant or recently nursing
· Patients 40+ should understand potential need for reading glasses
· Other medical conditions or high prescriptions will be reviewed individually.

Funding & Selection

Funding is limited to 2026. Eligible participants are selected via a random lottery:

Q1 lottery: Procedure by end of Q2
Q3 lottery: Procedure by end of Q4

A waiting list will fill any cancellations. Meeting eligibility does not guarantee selection.

How to Begin?

Schedule a dilated eye exam with special testing and let the SCHC Optometry Department know you’re interested in vision correction surgery.

Rapidly spreading flu variant symptoms, self-care and when to seek help
By Andy Taylor

A fast‑moving influenza surge is sweeping across the United States, driven largely by a newly dominant strain known as H3N2 subclade K, often referred to as the “super flu.” Cases are rising sharply nationwide, with high or very high flu activity reported in the majority of states, and the CDC confirming this variant accounts for roughly 90% of circulating infections.

If you’re sick, please stay home. Staying home helps stop the spread of this virus as well as helps you recover faster.

The symptoms of this year’s flu come on suddenly and tend to be intense. Adults and children commonly experience:

· Fever
· Chills
· Severe body aches
· Headache
· Cough
· Sore throat
· Sinus congestion
· Overwhelming fatigue
· GI symptoms include nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

With this flu variant going around right now, many children are experiencing myositis. This is sudden severe calf or leg pain that causes them to walk on their tiptoes, or refuse to walk altogether.

Most people can manage their symptoms at home. Over‑the‑counter options such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen help reduce fever and pain, while decongestants, saline sprays, warm tea with raw honey and humidifiers can provide additional relief.

Staying hydrated and resting as much as possible remain essential. A tip to staying hydrated easily is pop cycles. These provide needed hydration to both adults and children, in small sips so it’s easier to ingest.

It’s crucial to know when home care is not enough. Seek immediate medical attention if you or your child experience difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, inability to stay awake, severe dehydration, or a fever that improves and then returns worse. If you’ve been sick longer than 10 days, or if you have new and worsening symptoms.

Infants under 12 weeks with any fever should also be seen promptly, as should anyone whose symptoms worsen after several days.

With flu activity expected to remain elevated for weeks, experts continue to urge preventive measures such as vaccination, handwashing, and staying home when sick to slow the spread.
