Yesterday, I saw a new client ... They fell asleep during their massage. Some may see that as simply being relaxed, but really consider: brand new client, unfamiliar place, basically naked on a table (modestly draped, but still!) with a person they've just met touching their body. YET... their nervous system, despite all this, responded to the dark, quiet room, and slow, intentional motion, relaxing to the point that they drifted off. Living in fight or flight is very much an issue in today's hectic world. Our minds and bodies are anticipating the next threat when stuck in fight or flight. The next meeting, the next deadline, the next task, never ending texts/emails. Your body stays locked in, never really letting go and relaxing. Massage helps reset and restore the nervous system into rest and digest. "Rest and digest" is where your body can focus on healing itself (ever notice when you're stressed and not sleeping well your digestion is off, you're sluggish, more apt to sickness?) That post massage feeling of a bit of a natural high is just your body saying "wow, I feel lighter. More relaxed. Reset" We were never designed for a constant state of fight or flight.Your body is worth the investment of bodywork that helps sooth your nervous system. Take time for quiet, for resting, whatever that looks like for you (spending time in nature, getting some sun light, walking, yoga, meditation etc) Your nervous system will thank you! Now go touch some grass!
