Intermediate Hatha Yoga ~ Mondays ~ 5:30p.m.~ 6:45p.m.

The Sanskrit word, Hatha, translates literally as β€œforce.” Hatha yoga translates to β€œthe yoga of force,” or anything that we do with the physical body to attain the state of Yoga, which is the blissful true form of the Self. Hatha yoga includes postures (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama), mudras and bandhas (hand or full body gestures), and kriyas (cleansing techniques).

In this Intermediate Hatha Yoga class, students experience some or all of these physical practices. A typical class incorporates relaxation of the mind and body before and after pranayama and postures, which include sun salutations to warm and strengthen the body, followed by a series of traditional asanas with some intermediate level postures and variations. The practice is performed more slowly than in a vinyasa flow style class. It is helpful to have some prior knowledge of yoga and/or be in moderately good physical condition.

Benefits of Hatha yoga include strengthening and increased flexibility of the body; improved awareness of the internal and external state of the body; cleansing of the internal organs, cardiovascular, and nervous systems; and calming and clearing of the mind. These physical and subtle benefits help one towards the attainment of Yoga.
