Welcome to the new site. This site will be geared towards all things Safety. That is Occupational Safety and Health or Safety and Occupational Health however you prefer to call it.

My business is geared to helping any business have a safer workplace or work process and in the end, to save money.

My unique and varied background lends to being able to identify issues and provide recommendations/solutions to them. I am well versed in inspecting, planning and conducting training, assessing hazards, managing programs and giving briefings. I can help the small business owner understand if they have any safety risks that need addressed, I can help an attorney determine if proper procedures were followed in a workplace mishap, and can provide an opinion to an insurance company if proper training was given, if hazards were addressed and if procedures were followed.

How can I do all this you ask? Let me tell you a little about my background.

Military
I served in the US Army or the DC Army National Guard from Nov 1972 until I retired in February 1999. If I wasn't on active duty, I was in the Guard as a weekend warrior. I was a helicopter pilot, instructor pilot, Night Vision Goggle instructor pilot, Aviation Life Support Equipment officer, Unit Safety Officer, Tactical Operations and Training Officer and an Army Medical Department aviator during the course of my career. Full time with the Guard, I worked as a flight operations specialist, Training Officer, Facility Operations Officer or Instructor Pilot/Aviation Safety Officer.

Law Enforcement
I completed the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy class #1 in October 1977 and worked for the Fairfax County Sheriffs department for 3 years in the Adult Detention Center as a jailer, trainer and in transportation. In 1986, I was a pilot for the Fairfax County Police Department until going back on active duty with the DC ARNG.

Commercial Pilot
I was a MedSTAR pilot at the Washington Hospital Center and Maryland Airport for just over 6 years after retiring from the military. During my second year, I became the safety officer and managed their safety program until I left in December 2004. While in this position I was on a regional safety committee for Corporate Jets, Inc. and was a board member of the Mid-Atlantic Helicopter Association. I developed a new flight training program for all medical crew members to train and qualify in the newly acquired EC-135. Was part of successful Joint Commission and CAMTS surveys.

Hospital Safety
In 2004 I went to work at the DC VA Medical Center in the Safety Office. I had responsibility to inspect all areas of the hospital, long term care facility, outside clinics and boarding homes. While in this position, I became the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the hospital, was a member of a regional VA Safety committee, emergency preparedness committee, and was a member of the DC Hospital Association Emergency planning committee. I taught new employee orientation, how to prevent surgical fires, was a member of the infection control committee, and the workers compensation review committee. Was part of a successful Joint Commission survey.

Federal Government
In 2006, I went to work for the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) as the Safety Manager at the US Capitol Building, and in 2008, the Capitol Visitors Center was added. In this position I have worked on small projects (demo and rebuild rooms) to large mega projects (Dome Restoration project and the Exterior Stone and Metal project). Projects routinely dealt with lead and asbestos so I am familiar with requirements for these type of projects. In the 10+ years in this position, I was involved with conducting workplace audits or job assessments. I helped the Office of the Attending Physician prepare for a successful Joint Commission survey. I also performed as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the Capitol Building. While in this position, I attended and completed the Department of Homeland Securities National Planners Course. Here are some of the safety programs that I have managed over the last 10+ years at the AOC.
