With World Hepatitis Day this month, the SAMHSA Region 3 Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) highlighted the interconnected health challenges that our communities face that has come to be known as a syndemic and collaborative approach we’ve taken to address this interplay. In the Central East region (as in much of the country), we’re contending with a complex web of issues: overdose, mental health disorders, Hepatitis C (HCV), HIV, and other STDs. One of our key strategies at the Central East PTTC has been enduring partnership with other Federal Training and Technical Assistance (T/TA) Centers, coming together in a collaboration known as the Mid-Atlantic Training Collaborative for Health and Human Services (MATCHHS). Dr. Linda Frank, Principal Investigator, MidAtlantic AIDS Education & Training Center and one of the key (and original) members of the MATCHHS collaboration discusses her involvement over the years.

To learn tips on how to open a dialogue with talking yourself into wellness, join host, Anthony President and guest, Karen Faith, for episode 11 (Talking Yourself Into Wellness) of our Walking in Wellness podcast series where Karen talks about how she has a dialogue with her internal voices to understand why her “negative” internal voice is stopping her from doing wellness tasks.

According to a recent article from Politico, fatal drug overdoses in the U.S. increased by more than 50 percent during the pandemic but Lucas County in Ohio saw a 20% decline in overdoses between 2020 and 2022. The county brought together health department workers, treatment providers, clergy, and law enforcement to target resources where they were most needed. As a result, they were able to make it easier to overcome funding cuts and bureaucratic hurdles.

The Central East ATTC is committed to fostering a positive and affirming environment that acknowledges LGBTQ identities and realities. Though nearly every care provider expresses the intention of creating a welcoming environment for LGBTQ clients, good intentions alone are not enough to maintain a practice free of prejudice, repair poor office forms and protocols, minimize microaggressions, and eradicate disrespect for the lived experiences of sexual and gender minority community members. When a member of any marginalized group enters your setting, they are scanning for potential threats, hazards, and disappointments with their care as a reflexive gesture of self-protection. This factsheet provides an overview of indicators for creating safety and engagement techniques that can help build trust and reassurance for your LGBTQ clients.
