We are honored to recognize Joan B. Beasley, PhD as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Wolfensberger Valor Award! 🏆

Dr. Beasley is a nationally and internationally respected leader in the field of mental health and intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). She serves as Research Professor and Director of the National Research Consortium for Mental Health in IDD at the Institute on Disability, College of Health and Human Services, University of New Hampshire. With decades of experience, Dr. Beasley’s visionary work has transformed crisis prevention and mental health service delivery across the U.S.

As the primary author and founder of the START model in 1988, and later the Center for START Services at UNH, her impact has been wide-reaching. Her current work continues to elevate inclusive, solutions-focused research that promotes well-being for individuals with IDD.

Researchers at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center have just published a new study reporting on how diagnostic overshadowing continues to be a concern. We know that persons with intellectual disability are at increased risk of presenting the full range of psychiatric conditions but the accurate diagnosis is often missed because mental health professionals misattribute the symptoms of mental health conditions, delaying access to effective treatment or even leading to the recommendation of ineffective treatment.
