Webinar Synopsis:

Racial oppression remains a reality in the United States, and African Americans still suffer from historical and current oppressive structures. As the nation continues to grapple with how to address this social ill, therapists and counselors must set the example by equipping themselves with culturally competent tools that will improve their ability to dismantle racial oppression in clinical practice.

This course helps clinicians to move beyond the requisite diversity course and develop a deeper understanding and integration of their racial blind spots and the multifaceted implications of social, systemic, institutionalized, and internalized oppression. Through personal story-sharing and professional treatment scenarios, Dr. Buckingham will demonstrate how to use emotional intelligence as a clinical tool to deliver culturally sensitive care to African American clients.

Learning Objectives:

✅Define the historical context and purpose of racism
✅Define racial oppression
✅Distinguish between covert and overt racism
✅Identify at least three potential clinician racial blind spots with African American clients
✅Apply emotional intelligence (EQ) as a tool to dismantle racial oppression in clinical practice.

Would you believe me if I told you that your future is based on your vision?

What do you see what you look in the mirror of possibilities?

1) Do you see weakness and limitations or dominance and greatness?

2) Are you a lamb or a lion?

I've learned that in order to succeed in life each one of us have to tap into the lion inside of us. We have to believe in our power to achieve and be willing to demonstrate fearlessness when confronted with adversity.

I don't know about you, but when I look into the mirror I see a lion who is capable of winning despite being born into and experiencing conditions that positioned me to lose.

Remember that your future is what you envision!

Could you imagine what the world would be like if people took time to hold themselves accountable by looking within before they look outward?

There is not one human-being walking this earth who is free of flaws. Given this, I highly recommend that we all spend some time with ourselves and determine if we barriers to social justice or racial harmony.

Because the fact is this...

Would you believe me if told you that you get value where you give value?

It amazes me how people expect to receive value at work, in their relationships and life, but do not give value in these areas. I’ve learned a lot of things during my time on earth and have concluded that value is reciprocal. What you desire in life is best manifested through what you are willing to give.

Simply put, you get value where you give value.

Agree or disagree?

Life is full of sucker punches and sometimes we get knocked down, but please remember that failure is not determined by your setback, but by your unwillingness to fight back.

Just know that each setback is teaching you how to fight with less anger, less disappointment and with more calmness and encouragement. You got this and no one can keep you down, but you.

Embrace your setbacks and use them to your advantage. If fight is in you, so is victory.

Did you know that emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, anger and excessive worry can contribute to headaches, upset stomach, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, abnormal sleeping and chest pain?

I share this information because a large percent of people struggle and eventually give up when it comes to doing healing work.

I often get, "Dr. Buckingham, this is too hard. I feel worse."

My response, "You feel worse because you are not hiding anymore. Healing from pain can be difficult, but suffering in silence can be deadly."

As you navigate through life remember this: People who suffer from emotional and psychological pain are 10 times more likely to have health problems and experience other challenges at work and in their home.

You can continue to hide your emotional and psychological pain, but the outcome might be deadly.

Empathy is an indispensable life skill that requires a certain level of intellectual and emotional aptitude in order to recognize and understand the thoughts, emotions and perspectives that others might experience.

Simply stated, Empathy is not just about “walking in others’ shoes”. Empathy is the ability to connect with others in a manner in which they feel understood and emotionally safe.

Lack of empathy is one thing that makes individuals miserable in life, love and interpersonal relationships most aspects of life. If you cannot empathize with others, then you are unlikely to care about and connect with them.

Some people are good at objectifying other people, treating them like ‘things’ and even attacking them without any feeling of remorse. If you desire to develop work with others in harmony, you must learn to be empathetic.

Empathy will enable you to connect with individuals who think and behave differently than you.

Join me on Sunday, February 21, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm to talk about Empathy-Driven Mindset as I continue the Black History Month Trauma, Love & Resilience series.

Podcast interviewer:

Dr. Buckingham, what do you believe is the number one reason why people fail at being civil and compassion towards others?

Answer:

Lack of Empathy.

Podcast interviewer:

Why do people struggle with expressing and demonstrating empathy?

Answer:

Self-preservation. It is difficult to look out when you spend a great deal of time looking within. Preserve myself! Preserve my family! Preserve my community! Preserve my ethnic group! It is nearly impossible to imagine what it would be like to walk in someone else’s shoes when you believe that your survival is more important than others’ survival and/or needs.

Empathy is a very complex concept because there are many ways to express understanding and compassion. I believe that thousands of well-intended people fail at developing and expressing empathy on a daily basis because they have the wrong mindset.

See, some people live to preserve themselves and others live to preserve humanity. Individuals who live with a burning desire to understand, connect with and demonstrate compassion towards others have developed what I refer to as an Empathy-Driven Mindset.

We cannot simply rely on our emotions to guide us. Empathy-Driven Mindset recognizes that the mindset influences emotions and behavior. We think before we feel. Therefore, it is impossible to connect with someone in a compassionate manner if you believe that the person is not as important as you. It is impossible to connect with someone in a compassionate manner if you believe that the person created their hardship and should be responsible for fixing it. It is impossible to connect with someone in a compassionate manner if you believe that good intentions should overcompensate for incompetence and poor methods. Lastly, it is impossible to connect with someone in a compassionate manner if you believe that race does not matter.

Until more people develop an Empathy-Driven Mindset, civil unrest, racism and violence will remain front and center.

Podcast interviewer:

Mic drop, thank you Dr. Buckingham. Where can people learn more about your work and gain a deeper understanding of your Empathy-Driven Mindset concept?

Answer:

If you would like to learn more about how to develop an Empathy-Driven Mindset, join me on Sunday, February 21, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm to talk about Empathy-Driven Mindset as I continue the Black History Month Trauma, Love & Resilience series.
