Vernix is the white coating that covers baby in utero, helping lock in moisture and protecting their skin. As babies near term it can help indicate their gestational age, as term or post term babies tend to have less vernix. And you don’t need to wash it off, it perfectly absorbs into baby’s skin adding in extra nutrients, hydration and protection.

After a home birth a comprehensive newborn exam usually concludes with weighing baby, always right next to Mama.

The newborn exam is not rushed, Mom and baby have their golden hour, without need for separation for weighing or measuring.

And when it’s time for the newborn exam, it’s a family event. Siblings and family members often participate, helping measure, cut the cord, weigh and diaper baby.

It’s a gentle reminder that entering the postpartum season with your new baby is one of slowness and intentionality.
